Start a return

Reviewed

  1. Sign up or sign in. See Create an account.
  2. Choose your form. Pick the Tax year (the newest is marked “(last tax year)”), then Start filing 990-N, Start filing 990-EZ or Start filing 8868. Not sure which? See Which form do I file?.
  3. Check what we filled in. 990.tax reads the IRS record for your EIN: legal name, address, accounting period and exempt status. The return’s dates follow your IRS year end; see Tax year and fiscal year.
  4. Answer the questions page by page and choose Continue. Your answers are saved each time.

Before you can pay

990.tax checks the return against IRS records and IRS rules before it lets you pay, and lists anything to fix. It stops, for example, when:

  • the tax year has not ended yet,
  • the IRS (or 990.tax) already has a return for that year,
  • the IRS has revoked the organization’s exemption,
  • the return needs a schedule 990.tax cannot file; see What 990.tax does not file.

California organizations

If your organization is in California, the Choose your form page lists the state filings that also apply. You can add California Form 199 to a 990-N or 990-EZ; see Form 199 with 990.tax.

Questions

Can I stop and finish later?

Yes. Your answers are saved each time you choose Continue. Sign in later and open the organization: the return is under “Unfinished returns”, with “Continue this return”.

It says a return already exists for this year.

990.tax stops a second return for the same organization, form and year when the IRS or 990.tax already has one. If the earlier return was accepted and you need to change it, see “Amend a return you already filed”.

My organization is not in the list.

The list comes from the IRS exempt organization records, refreshed weekly. Try the EIN instead of the name. If the IRS has no record because your organization is covered by a parent’s group exemption, see “Group exemption number”. Otherwise email [email protected].

Still need help?

Email [email protected] with your organization’s name, its EIN and the tax year. A person answers every message.
