File Form 990-EZ step by step
Reviewed
Price: $99.99. You pay at the end, after signing.
The 990-EZ editor follows the IRS form. The menu on the left shows each section:
- Basic information. Organization, tax period, exempt status, website, and the Schedule B question (whether any one contributor gave $5,000 or more).
- Part I — Revenue, expenses and changes in net assets.
- Part II — Balance sheets, beginning and end of year. Total assets of $500,000 or more at year end means you must file Form 990 instead.
- Part III — Program service accomplishments.
- Part IV — Officers, directors, trustees and key employees.
- Parts V and VI — Other information, yes/no questions about the year.
- Schedule A for 501(c)(3) organizations: why the organization is a public charity, and the public support figures.
- California pages if you add Form 199.
- Filing officer information. The officer who signs.
- Review and Submit. A PDF preview of the return. Choose File and Pay.
- Sign Form 8453-TE in the window that opens; see Sign Form 8453.
- Pay on Stripe’s page; see Pay and send.
Before you start
Have the year’s income and expenses, the balance sheet at the start and end of the year, and the officers’ names, titles and hours. The IRS instructions explain every line.
Schedules
990.tax files Schedule A and Schedule O. If your answers need another schedule (B, C, E, G, L or N), the editor stops with a message that the schedule is currently unsupported; see What 990.tax does not file.
Questions
Can I see the return before I pay?
Yes. The Review and Submit page shows a PDF preview of the return as it will be filed.
A page will not let me continue.
Each page lists what is missing or inconsistent in red under the field. Fix those and choose Continue. If the message says a schedule is currently unsupported, see “What 990.tax does not file”.
