Amend a return you already filed
Reviewed
Amending means changing a return the IRS has already accepted. A rejected return is not amended; it is fixed and refiled for free.
Form 990-EZ
The Form 990-EZ instructions say to file a complete return for the same year, check Amended return in Item B, and explain what changed on Schedule O.
In 990.tax, the 990-EZ Basic information page has an Amended return checkbox and a box for the explanation, which goes on Schedule O. Because 990.tax normally stops a second return for a year the IRS already has, email [email protected] with the organization’s EIN and tax year before you start an amended return, so we can set it up.
Form 990-N
The IRS has no amended e-Postcard.
Form 8868
An accepted extension does not need amending. You file the return itself by the extended date.
Questions
The IRS rejected my return. Is fixing it an amendment?
No. A rejected return was never filed. Fix it and refile; see “Rejected: fix and refile”. An amendment changes a return the IRS accepted.
We made a mistake on an accepted 990-N.
There is no amended 990-N. The 990-N asks for very little; if your officer or address changed, the next year’s 990-N carries the new details. Email [email protected] if something is seriously wrong.
