Mission

MathJax, Inc., provides software for displaying mathematical notation in web pages while making it accessible to users who have disabilities such a blindness or dyslexia. MathJax can be used to make educational, research materials, and publications on STEM subjects accessible to the visually impaired, improving the quality of life for them, and their ability to progress in their educations and careers.

990-EZ for the year ended December 31, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • Development of the MathJax software library, including the speech rule engine that underlies its support for the visually impaired. The software is freely available to anyone. Usage information is difficult to acquire, as we do not have access to the logs for all installations of MathJax, but one of the major content delivery networks (CDNs) lists MathJax among its top 10 most popular libraries (of over 1 million being served), with over 3.1 billion requests per month. MathJax can also be incorporated into other projects, and one of the major mechanisms for doing so (npm.js) lists over 150 projects that do. The source code repository on GitHub shows 13,000 followers for the MathJax projects. We made the official v4.0.0 release in August, a major update for MathJax including significant improvements to its assistive support. A v4.1.0 release followed in December, addressing some issues and request from our users.
    Expenses $113,865
  • Documentation for how to use MathJax in webpages and incorporate it into other applications, for accessible mathematical notation. We do not have statistics on how many users view the documentation (it is not hosted on a machine for which we have access to the server logs), but Google's search report indicates more than 11,800 searches per month that reach www.mathjax.org (though the documentation is hosted elsewhere). The MathJax issue tracker had more than 164 issues posted in 2025, with nearly all of them receiving an answer from MathJax developers. The v4.0.0 also included a major update to the on-line documentation, expanding sections that were limited or missing in the v3 documentation, adding numerous new examples, and improving clarity throughout. The documentation is now over 450 pages (with 58 pages just about what's new in v4 alone).
    Expenses $38,600
