Mission

To create systemic change in mental health by providing programming and resources in mental health for those who are LGBTQIA and BIPOC in our community.

990 for the year ended December 31, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • The purpose of the Clients in the Margins Program is to provide access to safe and competent therapy services for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ individuals in the community. The program served 497 individuals through direct on-going programming, including the Therapy Fund, Rooted + Free youth umbrella, urgent-response community group therapy programs, and partnership with the Nashville PRIDE Festival. The Therapy Fund was able to provide over $86,000 in funding towards therapy sessions (870 sessions) for BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ community members who qualified for financial support to see a mental health clinician of their choosing. Healing in the Margins continued its partnership with the Youth Community Action Program (YCAP) of the YMCA of Middle Tennessee to provide Rooted + Free-specially-tailored youth programming through the Clients in the Margins program. Through this offering, the organization was able to provide 10-week psychoeducation and group therapy programming for underserved middle school students on two separate YCAP campuses. Youth who participated in this program experienced slight, moderate, and significant improvements in self-esteem, mental health literacy, joy activation, ability to name comforts and discomforts. Through the continued partnership with Nashville PRIDE Festival, Healing in the Margins was able to expand its reach, serving 350 individuals through at least one hour of wellness programming, compared to the 300 who participated in 2024.
    Expenses $142,108 · grants $30,000 · revenue $11,549
  • The Clinicians in the Margins program aims to provide direct educational and community-building support for therapist in our community who are BIPOC and/or LGBTQIA. The organization's Clinicians in the Margins program served a total of 30 clinicians who qualified for services. Clinicians were supported through community support gatherings and advanced trauma training. The organization supported a small cohort through another Brainspotting Phase I training in 2025. This training equipped clinicians with advanced tools to treat their clients' symptoms of trauma and PTSD. Healing in the Margins was also able to complete its year-long survey with fourteen of 2024 Brainspotting cohort participants, tracking the community "ripple effect" when clinicians are provided with adequate tools and resources to treat clients. The survey showed that, as a result of the Brainspotting training in 2024: 158 total Brainspotting sessions were conducted with clients in the community who are BIPOC, 175 sessions with individuals who are LGBTQIA+, 96 sessions with individuals who identify as both BIPOC and LGBTQIA+, for a total of over 429 trauma-informed therapy sessions conducted as a result 2024 training.
    Expenses $15,892
  • The aim of the Competency in the Margins program is to reduce harm and increase competency in areas of mental health for those who are BIPOC and LGBTQIA in our community. The program expanded its reach through the development of the Healing in the Margins Professional Clinical Association (HMPCA). This new extension of the Competency program is a collective of "culturally responsive providers in Tennessee." Healing in the Margins is accredited by the National Board of Certified Counselors as an Approved Continuing Education Provider for mental health professionals. In 2025, HMPCA facilitated 9 continuing education and self-care events for Tennessee mental health providers, with 95 attendees.
    Expenses $16,453 · revenue $7,200
  • In 2025, Healing in the Margins launched a new program- Clarksville's House of Healing. Clarksville's House of Healing is a direct-services mental health site, serving individuals in the Clarksville, Tennessee area with affordable, high-quality mental health care. It was identified that the LGBTQIA+ community in Clarksville felt that adequate and affirming mental health resources were lacking in the area. In response to this need, Healing in the Margins launched its direct-service site. The site operates on an income-based sliding scale, and is supported by local foundation grants to supplement the cost of therapy for individuals who need it most. In 2025, Clarksville's House of Healing provided 1,024 mental health therapy sessions. The average out of pocket cost per session for clients was $40- compared to the region's $120 per-session average for out of pocket therapy. 87% of clients reported having an increased understanding of personal trauma after only 6 sessions, and 81% reported increased ability to manage triggers effectively and reduced feelings of depression and/or anxiety. Additionally, every licensed provider, pre-licensed provider, and clinical intern at Clarksville's House of Healing is equipped with advanced trauma training and advanced LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC Competency training to serve clients with the care and effectiveness they deserve.
