Program accomplishments

  • CHANGENT OFFERS SCALABLE, DATA-DRIVEN PROGRAMS THAT SUPPORT LONG-TERM HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF CHILDREN AND FAMILIES. THROUGH THESE PROGRAMS, CHANGENT SUPPORTS 272 IMPLEMENTING PARTNER ORGANIZATIONS IN 39 STATES, THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, PUERTO RICO, THE U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS, AND TRIBAL COMMUNITIES, SERVING OVER 400,000 FAMILIES SINCE ITS INCEPTION.NURSE-FAMILY PARTNERSHIP (NFP) PAIRS EXPECTANT MOTHERS AND FAMILIES WITH SPECIALLY EDUCATED HOME VISITING NURSES WHO PROVIDE SUPPORT DURING PREGNANCY AND THE EARLIEST YEARS OF A CHILD'S LIFE. NFP TARGETS PREGNANT WOMEN FACING ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL ADVERSITY, AND EACH MOTHER RECEIVES NURSE HOME VISITS THROUGH THEIR CHILD'S SECOND BIRTHDAY. THE PROGRAM'S THREE PRIMARY GOALS ARE TO (CONTINUED ON SCHEDULE O) (1) IMPROVE PREGNANCY OUTCOMES, (2) IMPROVE CHILD HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT, AND (3) IMPROVE THE ECONOMIC SELF-SUFFICIENCY OF THE FAMILY. THREE RANDOMIZED CONTROLLED TRIALS CONDUCTED OVER MORE THAN 45 YEARS HAVE CONFIRMED THE PROGRAM'S EFFECTIVENESS: A 48% REDUCTION IN CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT; A 56% REDUCTION IN EMERGENCY ROOM VISITS FOR ACCIDENTS AND POISONINGS; A 59% REDUCTION IN ARREST AT CHILD AGE 15; A 67% REDUCTION IN BEHAVIORAL AND INTELLECTUAL PROBLEMS AT CHILD AGE 6; AND A 72% REDUCTION IN CONVICTIONS OF MOTHERS AT CHILD AGE 15.CHILD FIRST (CF) PROVIDES MENTAL HEALTH INTERVENTION AND SUPPORT SERVICES THROUGH A PROVEN HOME VISITING MODEL THAT BUILDS AND STRENGTHENS RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN CAREGIVERS AND THEIR CHILDREN. CF SUPPORTS FAMILIES WHO HAVE BEEN AFFECTED BY TRAUMA, CHRONIC STRESS, AND SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC ADVERSITY THROUGH A CLINICAL TEAM MODEL AND FOCUSES ON TWO PARALLEL, INTERDEPENDENT GOALS: (1) BUILDING STRONG, NURTURING, AND PROTECTIVE CAREGIVER-CHILD RELATIONSHIPS, AND (2) CONNECTING FAMILIES WITH THE SERVICES AND SUPPORT THEY NEED TO STABILIZE AND THRIVE. A RANDOMIZED CONTROL TRIAL FOUND POSITIVE OUTCOMES FOR CHILD FIRST, INCLUDING A 64% DECREASE IN MATERNAL DEPRESSION OR MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS, 42% DECREASE IN CHILD AGGRESSIVE AND DEFIANT BEHAVIORS, AND 40% DECREASE IN CHILD WELFARE INVOLVEMENT.
