Mission

DCIS UNDERSTOOD IS A VOLUNTEER-LED 501(C)(3) PUBLIC CHARITY FOUNDED IN 2024 BY A PATIENT ADVOCATE. THE ORGANIZATION'S MISSION IS TO INCREASE AWARENESS AND KNOWLEDGE OF DUCTAL CARCINOMA IN SITU (DCIS) AND TO ACCELERATE DCIS RESEARCH THROUGH EDUCATION, ADVOCACY, AND FUNDING. DCIS IS A NON-INVASIVE BREAST CONDITION, OFTEN REFERRED TO AS STAGE 0 BREAST CANCER, DIAGNOSED IN APPROXIMATELY 60,000 INDIVIDUALS IN THE UNITED STATES EACH YEAR. DESPITE ITS PREVALENCE, PATIENTS FREQUENTLY RECEIVE LIMITED INFORMATION AT DIAGNOSIS AND FACE COMPLEX, TIME-SENSITIVE TREATMENT DECISIONS WITH LITTLE PATIENT-CENTERED GUIDANCE AVAILABLE. DCIS UNDERSTOOD WAS FOUNDED TO CLOSE THAT INFORMATION GAP AND TO GIVE PATIENTS AND THEIR FAMILIES A TRUSTED, INDEPENDENT SOURCE OF EDUCATION AND SUPPORT.

990-EZ for the year ended December 31, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • THE ORGANIZATION OPERATES A SINGLE INTEGRATED PROGRAM THAT SERVES DCIS PATIENTS, THEIR FAMILIES, CLINICIANS, AND THE GENERAL PUBLIC THROUGH THREE COORDINATED ACTIVITIES. ADVOCACY: THE ORGANIZATION RAISES PUBLIC AWARENESS OF DCIS, PROMOTES INFORMED SHARED DECISION-MAKING BETWEEN PATIENTS AND THEIR CLINICIANS, AND WORKS TO ELEVATE THE PATIENT VOICE IN RESEARCH AND POLICY PRIORITIES. SUPPORT: THE ORGANIZATION PROVIDES COPING RESOURCES AND CURATED REFERRALS TO SUPPORT COMMUNITIES FOR INDIVIDUALS NAVIGATING A DCIS DIAGNOSIS. THESE ACTIVITIES ARE DELIVERED PRIMARILY THROUGH THE ORGANIZATION'S PUBLIC WEBSITE (DCISUNDERSTOOD.ORG) AND THROUGH PARTNERSHIPS WITH CLINICIANS, RESEARCHERS, AND PATIENT COMMUNITIES.DURING THE TAX YEAR, DCIS UNDERSTOOD LAUNCHED ITS PUBLIC EDUCATIONAL PLATFORM AT DCISUNDERSTOOD.ORG AND REACHED APPROXIMATELY 2,200 NEW USERS FROM THE UNITED STATES AND NINE OTHER COUNTRIES SEEKING INFORMATION ABOUT DCIS. IN ADDITION, THE ORGANIZATION ATTENDED THE SAN ANTONIO BREAST CANCER SYMPOSIUM AND THE ANNUAL BREAST CANCER SYMPOSIUM IN HUDSON, NY, WHICH YIELDED NUMEROUS PARTNERSHIPS AND PROFESSIONAL CONNECTIONS; PARTICIPATED IN A WIDELY FOLLOWED PODCAST; WAS FEATURED IN AN ARTICLE IN CURE MAGAZINE; AND LAUNCHED A COORDINATED FUNDRAISING STRATEGY DESIGNED TO ENGAGE INDIVIDUAL DONORS, FOUNDATIONS, AND CORPORATE PARTNERS; ALL CONTRIBUTIONS RECEIVED DURING THE TAX YEAR CAME FROM INDIVIDUAL DONORS.
