TO PROMOTE THE DEVELOPMENT AND IMPROVEMENT OF BUSINESS DISTRICTS, NEIGHBORHOODS AND OTHER AFFECTED COMMUNITIES IN AND AROUND SPOKANE, WASHINGTON, AND TO SUPPORT COMMON BUSINESS INTEREST IN INDEPENDENT LOCAL ADVOCACY.

990 for the year ended August 31, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • MEMBER SERVICES: SBA PROVIDED MEMBERS WITH MEANINGFUL OPPORTUNITIES TO ENGAGE DIRECTLY WITH ISSUES AFFECTING SPOKANE'S BUSINESS CLIMATE AND QUALITY OF LIFE. THROUGH 100 CONSECUTIVE DAYS OF 5:00 A.M. WALKS THROUGH DOWNTOWN SPOKANE, SBA BROUGHT BUSINESS LEADERS, RESIDENTS, ELECTED OFFICIALS, AND COMMUNITY STAKEHOLDERS TOGETHER TO OBSERVE DOWNTOWN CONDITIONS FIRSTHAND AND ENGAGE IN DISCUSSIONS REGARDING PUBLIC SAFETY AND ECONOMIC VITALITY. SBA ALSO HOSTED REGULAR FOCUS COUNCILS WITH NEIGHBORHOODS, DEVELOPERS, ELECTED OFFICIALS, CITY AND COUNTY OFFICIALS, AND OTHER STAKEHOLDERS TO IMPROVE COMMUNICATION, COLLABORATION, AND LOCAL PROCESSES AFFECTING MEMBERS AND THE BROADER BUSINESS COMMUNITY. THESE ACTIVITIES INCREASED MEMBER ENGAGEMENT, FACILITATED STAKEHOLDER COLLABORATION, AND STRENGTHENED RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT.
  • ADVOCACY: SBA ADVOCATED FOR POLICIES THAT PROMOTE SAFE AND ACCESSIBLE PUBLIC SPACES, PUBLIC ORDER, AND ACCOUNTABILITY IN SPOKANE. SBA HELPED SHAPE SPOKANE'S SAFE AND ACCESSIBLE SPACES ORDINANCE, WHICH WAS UNANIMOUSLY APPROVED BY THE SPOKANE CITY COUNCIL ON OCTOBER 27, 2025, RESTORING SAFE PUBLIC SPACES WHILE CONNECTING PEOPLE TO SERVICES. SBA ALSO ELEVATED THE COMMUNITY'S PROPOSITION 1 VOTE INTO A BROADER DISCUSSION REGARDING ENFORCEMENT, PUBLIC ORDER, AND ACCOUNTABILITY TO VOTER DIRECTION, WHILE SUPPORTING UPDATED CAMPING, OBSTRUCTION, AND ENFORCEMENT POLICIES THAT PAIR ACCOUNTABILITY WITH SERVICE CONNECTION. AS A RESULT, MULTIPLE POLICY CHANGES AND ENFORCEMENT MEASURES WERE ADVANCED DURING THE YEAR, CONTRIBUTING TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF NEW PUBLIC-SPACE MANAGEMENT POLICIES THROUGHOUT SPOKANE.
  • EDUCATION: SBA EDUCATED MEMBERS, POLICYMAKERS, AND THE BROADER COMMUNITY ON ISSUES AFFECTING SPOKANE'S FUTURE THROUGH RESEARCH, PUBLIC FORUMS, AND INFORMATION-SHARING INITIATIVES. DURING THE YEAR, SBA COMMISSIONED AND RELEASED A REPORT BY DR. ROBERT MARBUT EVALUATING THE LOCAL HOMELESS POPULATION AND IDENTIFYING OPPORTUNITIES FOR TREATMENT, ACCOUNTABILITY, AND REGIONAL COORDINATION. SBA ALSO HOSTED A CITY COUNCIL CANDIDATE FORUM, PROVIDING VOTERS AND BUSINESS LEADERS WITH DIRECT ACCESS TO CANDIDATES AND INFORMATION ON KEY ISSUES IMPACTING SPOKANE. THESE EFFORTS INFORMED PUBLIC DISCUSSION AND INCREASED AWARENESS OF POLICY ISSUES AFFECTING THE LOCAL BUSINESS COMMUNITY.
