Program accomplishments

  • DSHS/ORIA Washington Mass Project: The Congolese United Foundation (CUF), through the DSHS/ORIA Washington Mass Project, provided during 6 months critical support services to asylum seekers, refugees, and vulnerable immigrant families by offering legal and housing referrals, job readiness training, financial literacy and tenant rights workshops, immigration ?Know Your Rights? education, interpretation services, advocacy, emotional support, food assistance, hygiene kits, emergency transportation, and basic household furnishings for newly housed clients. CUF also hosted 3 transition workshops and connected clients to ongoing community resources and service providers as the project concluded. Despite significant fear and mistrust within the immigrant community due to increased ICE enforcement activity in Washington State, CUF remained committed to protecting client confidentiality and continuing services to vulnerable households. Between January 1 and June 30, CUF served 120 individuals across more than 20 households, including additional eligible clients supported through organizational funds to ensure uninterrupted assistance and community-centered care.

  • Colorectal Cancer Awareness Afya ya Utumbo: The Congolese United Foundation (CUF), through the Afya ya Utumbo Project sponsored by Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center, provided culturally and linguistically tailored colorectal cancer education, outreach, and screening navigation services to African immigrant communities in King County. The project educated more than 300 individuals through workshops, faith-based discussions, and community outreach conducted in English, French, and Lingala, while educational materials were distributed to over 500 community members through in-person events and digital platforms. CUF also surveyed 156 participants to assess awareness and knowledge gaps regarding colorectal cancer risks, symptoms, and screening guidelines. In partnership with HealthPoint clinics and UW Medicine/Harborview Medical Center, CUF worked to strengthen referral pathways and screening access for underserved and uninsured immigrants by addressing barriers such as language, transportation, fear, and limited access to preventive healthcare. The project significantly increased awareness of colorectal cancer prevention and screening while promoting early detection, culturally responsive education, and improved linkage to care for vulnerable African immigrant populations.

  • TEA Mini-Grant Program: The Congolese United Foundation (CUF), through the TEA Mini-Grant Program sponsored by Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations (AAPCHO), implemented culturally and linguistically tailored tuberculosis (TB) and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) education and outreach activities targeting African immigrants, refugees, and asylum seekers in King County. CUF conducted community workshops, surveys, and outreach events in trusted spaces such as churches, community organizations, and temporary housing sites, providing education in English, French, Lingala, Swahili, and Portuguese to reduce barriers related to language, fear, and healthcare access. Through these efforts, CUF engaged and educated 136 participants, distributed culturally appropriate educational materials, and collected community-based data to better understand barriers to TB screening and care. The program addressed stigma, misinformation, immigration-related fears, and navigation challenges while promoting awareness of TB/LTBI prevention, testing, and treatment resources. CUF also strengthened partnerships with community leaders and public health stakeholders to improve linkage to care and support equitable access to health information and services for underserved immigrant populations.
