Mission
Seven Star Women's Kung Fu teaches self defense and the art of Kajukenbo to gender marginalized individuals (women identifying individuals and genderqueer/nonbinary people who live in the greater Seattle area). We represent four generations of women teaching women and nonbinary folks in the martial arts. For 43 years we have enabled individuals to learn self defense and train in the martial arts by offering free childcare to parents while they train, ASL interpreting, scholarships, sliding scale monthly dues based on income, and free community self defense classes.
Program accomplishments
- Martial Arts Program. Seven Star is dedicated to the empowerment of women identifying folks and nonbinary/genderfluid individuals through martial arts and self defense. We have a number of programs in place to facilitate women and girls and nonbinary/genderfluid folks training in the martial arts. Monthly dues are based on a sliding scale. Scholarships are available for ongoing training and special workshops. Parents can take advantage of free, onsite childcare during classes. Sign language interpreters make classes and tests more accessible for our deaf students. We have never turned an individual away due to an inability to pay. Our 2024 martial arts student population ranged between 60-70 students/month. We offer an introductory martial arts and self defense series three times a year serving approximately 20 students per session. We maintained a masking policy at the school throughout 2024 to support our immunocompromised students. In 2024, we tested 25 student for their next belt rank. We have students who are high school aged and students who are in the late 60s.Expenses $97,299
- Self Defense Program. Our mission and programs include a commitment to self defense, particularly for women and girls (age 11+). Seven Star Women's Kung Fu taught 22 self defense workshops serving 294 individuals in 2024. We teach self defense in the community with community partners, at-risk populations, schools, corporate groups, and small private groups. Our students volunteer their time to teach and assist at workshops. We pay our instructors for teaching time and administration time. We go out into the community to teach self-defense workshops free of charge.Expenses $3,263
