Mission
Medicine for Humanity is a medical care and teaching organization dedicated to restoring dignity, hope, and quality of life to women in the developing world. Founded in 1995 on the principle that ensuring the health of mothers leads to healthier communities, we provide surgical care and build sustainable programs to train the next generation of doctors. Since 2009, our work has been based in Mbarara, in southwestern Uganda, with a focus on treating obstetric fistula and other pelvic floor disorders resulting from childbirth injuries. An estimated 200,000 Ugandan women suffer from obstetric fistula, which causes chronic incontinence that can lead to infections, kidney disorders, as well as social isolation and stigmatization. Fistula and pelvic floor disorders affect the poorest and most powerless in society and though most can be cured with surgery, a vast gap exists between the number of women needing care and the number of skilled health workers able to provide it. The ultimate goal
Program accomplishments
- Dr. James Okello, our third Urogynecology Leadership Fellow, participated in four major urogynecology surgical clinics at regional referral hospitals in Mbarara, Lira, Hoima, and Jinja, providing patient screening, surgical treatment, postoperative follow-up, and gynecologic care for women with complex pelvic floor disorders and fistula-related conditions.Dr. James Okello participated in 332 surgical procedures, serving as lead surgeon in 163 cases and assistant surgeon in 128 cases. Procedures included fistula repairs, hysterectomies, pelvic floor repairs, sphincteroplasty, cervical cancer procedures, ovarian cystectomies, and other gynecologic and obstetric surgeries. In addition to clinical care, he provided medical education and supervision for undergraduate and postgraduate students, conducted routine ward rounds and emergency obstetric care, and supported maternal and neonatal health coordination efforts in the Lango Region.Dr. James Okello also contributed to public health advocacy, research, and community outreach focused on improving maternal and child health outcomes in Uganda. He participated in international maternal health conferences, collaborated with community organizations promoting reproductive health and girls education, and contributed to multiple research projects and publications addressing unsafe abortion, postpartum contraception, HIV prevention, sickle cell newborn screening, and maternal health outcomes.Expenses $17,454
