Program accomplishments
- Snow Angels Program - Program to assist senior citizens and those otherwise disabled to take care of snow removal on their sidewalks. This past winter was very light, but we did add a few more volunteer opportunities to the program. 25 people have been assisted so far.
- Community Garden - A community garden was established in 2021. This garden was used for both educational workshops for children and other residents, and also to provide fresh produce. Produce was given to seniors, residents, those living in subsidized housing and donated to organizations that supply free produce to those in need. We were able to hold six separate produce giveaways in our community this past year, in addition to donating produce to the Second Harvest community thrift store in Sharpsburg, which is a neighboring community to Blawnox. In addition to being a thrift store, Second Harvest always has non-perishable food goods and whatever produce they can get to offer to those in need. We were also able to supplement food giveaways from the North Hills Community Outreach with fresh produce from the garden at the Blawnox Boro office on a monthly basis throughout the summer. Lastly, we had some educational opportunities for children during the Fall Festival, allowing them to plant and grow their own produce.Expenses $26
- National Night Out - Provided a forum for residents to meet with first responders of the municipality. Funds were donated for offset some of the costs of refreshments and giveaways.Expenses $514 · grants $350
- Seed Swap - Seeds were made available for residents to take at no cost or to bring seeds of their own to share, to encourage residents to grow fresh produce in their own yards. This occurred throughout the summer months and happened during the weekly garden work nights in addition to community events, such as the Memorial Day Parade and the Annual Blawnox Community Picnic.
- Annual Cookie Tour - Provide encouragement to residents and those visitors from surrounding areas to visit our commercial vendors and establishments to promote those businesses and our community as being a very liveable and accessible community.Expenses $134
- Easter Egg Hunt - This event was designed to serve the children and families in the community. Howard Hanna Real Estate coordinated the event and candy was donated. We were able to support the additional costs of the event. We had over 100 local children attend at no cost to the families.Expenses $225
- Spring Art Fling - Best of Blawnox held a community art event, offering artists who worked with different mediums and different styles. There were interactive opportunities for children and adults to participate in, including watercolor painting and chalk drawing and art history. There were also exhibitions in glass blowing and different types of painting.Expenses $1,473 · grants $350
- Town Beautification - The Best of Blawnox paid for the creation of signs at the community park and the community garden and a planting around the portal sign at the entrance of our communityExpenses $854 · grants $875
- Thanksgiving Food Drive - We advertised and recruited to receive food to give away to food fragile families for the Thanksgiving holiday. We also received approximately 20 free turkeys and additional food supplies from the Arnold food pantry to distribute to those families. We made a donation to the pantry to thank them for their assistance.Expenses $150
