Program accomplishments

  • THE FRIENDS OF THE HISTORIC PLAYHOUSE THEATRE WAS ESTABLISHED TO SUSTAIN AND IMPROVE THE PLAYHOUSE MOVIE THEATRE SO THAT COMMUNITY MEMBERS MAY ENJOY THOUGHTFUL ENTERTAINMENT AND SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT IN A LOCAL, SHARED SETTING. THE PLAYHOUSE MOVIE THEATRE FIRST OPENED AT ITS RANDOLPH LOCATION ON AUGUST 4, 1919, AND HAS SURVIVED TO BE ONE OF THE FEW REMAINING SINGLE-PURPOSE THEATERS TO REMAIN IN OPERATION IN THE UNITED STATES. IT IS ELIGIBLE FOR INCLUSION ON THE NATIONAL REGISTRY OF HISTORIC PLACES AND IS A CHERISHED ASSET OF THE LOCAL COMMUNITY. THE PLAYHOUSE SHOWS BOTH "FIRST RUN," POPULAR FILMS AND LESSER-KNOWN "ART FILMS- AND DOCUMENTARIES TO PROVIDE CINEMATIC OPTIONS TO THE COMMUNITY. WE STARTED THE YEAR WITH A RUN OF FIVE CONSECUTIVE BEST PICTURE OSCAR NOMINEES. IN APRIL, BESS O'BRIEN, ACCOMPANIED BY FOLKS FEATURED IN HER FILM, BROUGHT JUST GETTING BY, HER DOCUMENTARY ON HOMELESSNESS IN VERMONT, TO THE PLAYHOUSE. JAY CRAVEN LIKEWISE BROUGHT LOST NATION, HIS NEW FILM ABOUT THE FOUNDING OF OUR REPUBLIC, IN JULY. WE SCREENED THE ANIME FILM LOOK BACK AND THE DOCUMENTARIES BLINK AND THE WOMEN'S ADVENTURE TOUR 2024. AND FOR EIGHT WEEKS THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER WE RAN SATURDAY MATINEES OF CLASSIC CHILDREN'S MOVIES AT DRASTICALLY REDUCED PRICES. WHILE OUR VISION INCLUDES INFORMING AND INSPIRING OUR PATRONS, WE ARE ALSO COMMITTED TO PURE ENTERTAINMENT THROUGH THE SHOWING OF A HOST OF HOLLYWOOD HITS. WE WELCOMED WELL OVER 5,000 PATRONS TO THE MOVIES THIS PAST YEAR
