Mission

The Tahoe Backcountry Alliance is the voice for the human-powered winter backcountry community in the Lake Tahoe area, advocating for and informing our community about critical issues affecting winter backcountry recreation in and around Tahoe.

990-EZ for the year ended June 30, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • Tahoe Backcoutnry Alliance (TBA) is improving outdoor access, safety, and equity across the Tahoe Region through a variety of community focused programs. Most notably for fiscal 25/24 are the following:Ward Canyon - TBA has worked closely with Placer county to plan the construction of a new lot in Ward Canyon. Currently a disagreement exists between local homeowners and members of the public on the use of the lot, which has resulted in people being frequently ticketed during their attempts to access the backcountry. TBA has worked to provide a solution that results in expanded public access, doubling the size of the existing lot, while maintaining a constructive relationship with local homeowners. Surveys for this project are in progress.Mt. Tallac - TBA has continued to develop the parking area for the winter trail head at Mt. Tallac. While currently unpaved, (a continued long-term goal), the TBA has maintained the parking lot and provided funding for high blade plowing throughout the winter ski season.Donner Lake Run- TBA has continued to maintain and fund (in coordination withVisit Truckee Tahoe) the winter maintenance for the west end Donner Lake parking lot. This includes the funding of a plowing service and maintenance of trail markers and beacon checkers at the trailhead. In June TBA board members presented to the town of Truckee on the programs success and have secured a continuing partnership with the town for the next 5 years.Rubicon Peak- TBA is working to develop a new parking lot at the current Summer Access point to the Rubicon Peak Trail. Currently the parking area (a dead end) can only support a small handful of cars and provides no area for snowplows and emergency services to turn around safely. Members of TBA are working with the county to establish a site plan with the end goal of a paved lot in the coming years.Gear Library Program- TBA operates and maintains a local gear library wheremembers of the public can check out Snow-play passes, along with snowshoes andpoles, allowing for free access to many paid sites within the North Lake Tahoe Area.Jakes Peak & Highway 89- We continue to help maintain the various turnouts alonghighway 89 in the Jakes Peak area on the west shore. This includes the costs associated with plowing and the time commitment to advocate for improved winter access for both members of the public and emergency services.Washoe Community Engagement- For the last several years, TBA has raised fundsfor the purchase of ski and bike equipment for children in the Washoe Tribe to use and gain experience exploring the backcountry. Members of TBA volunteer their time to lead group snowshoe and bike outings and are engaged in building a local bike park, continually looking for ways to invest in and develop local community infrastructure.Event Tabling- TBA tables at a variety of community events raising overallawareness for our commitment to public backcountry access. These include local film festivals, avalanche awareness meetings, local resort events, and our own hosted gatherings.Grant Applications- Alongside the donations we receive from our members, significant time is spent by the board identifying and applying for grants to continue to fund the organizations expenses, along with the advancement of the various access projects.
