Mission

The Society of Native Nations (SNN) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded by Native individuals in Texas, with members spanning multiple states. Our mission is to advocate for Indigenous Peoples and future generations by protecting and preserving our culture, spirituality, teachings, medicine, and way of life. Our founding members bring diverse experiences from working within Indigenous communities and collaborating with various organizations, contributing unique values and perspectives to SNN. Collectively, we've witnessed the ongoing appropriation, erasure, and exploitation of Indigenous ways of life, as well as harmful policies disproportionately impacting our communities in areas such as healthcare, housing, education, mental health, substance abuse, and disability services. These experiences have compelled us to unite in defense of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and to confront the cumulative harms imposed on our lands, waters, air, and bodies.

Program accomplishments

  • PIPELINES TO PLASTICS PROJECT: Texas communities have been bearing the brunt of the expansion of the fossil fuel and petrochemical industry for generations from the Permian Basin to the Gulf of Texas. Since 2016, we've been fighting the growth of pipelines, refineries, and plastic production facilities that release toxic pollution into our air, water, and land. This pollution harms marine life, wildlife, and human life in our communities, which have been deemed sacrifice zones by industry and our government.
    Expenses $373,158
  • RETURN TO THE EARTH & MOLDING IT PROJECT: The Return to the Earth & Molding It Project is an educational and cultural initiative that teaches families the profound importance of using natural, earth-based materials in everyday life. By centering on the ancestral practice of working with clay, the project helps participants reconnect with traditions that honor the land, strengthen community, and promote healthier homes and environments.
    Expenses $248,773
  • COMMUNITY EMERGENCY SUPPORT PROJECT: The Emergency Community Response Program began in March 2020, created to meet the urgent needs of our community during the COVID-19 pandemic. What started as an immediate response to crisis has grown into a continuing commitment, as the needs of our people remain and, in many cases, have deepened.
    Expenses $11,523
  • YOUTH EDUCATION AND EMPOWERMENT: Native educators and youth organizers guide the design and implementation of experiential learning programs that strengthen cultural identity and intergenerational knowledge. Elders and youth work together in council to preserve culture, protect sacred sites, and revitalize Indigenous languages through stories and songs, laying the foundation for long-term intergenerational programming.
