Mission
PROMOTION AND PROTECTION OF FLORIDA'S COMMERCIAL FISHING INDUSTRY.
Program accomplishments
- SEAFOOD FESTIVALS - OUR ORGANIZATION WORKS 3 SEAFOOD FESTIVALS EVERY YEAR. THE MARATHON, CORTEZ, AND GRANT FESTIVALS ALLOW US TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ON COMMERCIAL FISHING. THIS LOOKS LIKE ENGAGING WITH FESTIVAL PATRONS ON OUR GEAR, BEST PRACTICES, SAFE SEAFOOD, AND WHAT QUESTIONS TO ASK WHEN PURCHASING SEAFOOD AT A RETAIL MARKET, RESTAURANT, OR GROCERY STORE. IT ALSO ALLOWS THE PUBLIC TO ASK OUR MEMBERS (FISHERMEN) QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT THEIR DAY-TO-DAY LOOKS LIKE. WE USE THESE FUNDS TO HELP OUR MEMBERS PAY THEIR MEMBERSHIP DUES, HELP OUR EXECUTIVE AND MEMBERS TRAVEL TO WORK WITH THE LEGISLATURE, FWC, AND OTHER IMPORTANT ADVOCACY EVENTS.
- TRAP RETRIEVAL CONTRACT WITH FWC - WE WORK WITH THE STATE TO REMOVE DERELICT TRAPS OUT OF THE WATER. THIS CLEANS UP OUR WATERS, PREVENTS MARINE LIFE FROM BEING TRAPPED, AND ALLOWS FOR BOATERS TO SAFELY NAVIGATE WATERWAYS. WE HAVE BEEN DOING THIS PROGRAM FOR OVER 20 YEARS, AND ARE PROUD TO HELP REMOVE THOUSANDS OF TRAPS OUT OF THE WATER EVERY YEAR. THE CONTRACT ALLOWS FOR 85% OF THE FUNDS TO GO TO OUR FISHERMEN AND 15% OF THE FUNDS GO TOWARDS PROPER INSURANCE AND OUR GENERAL FUND TO AGAIN, TRAVEL TO MEETINGS AROUND THE STATE.
- OUR MARINE DEBRIS PROGRAM IS A FULLY VOLUNTEER-BASED PROGRAM. OUR MEMBERS TAKE THEIR OWN VESSELS OUT TO CLEAN UP THEIR LOCAL WATERWAYS. AS A THANK YOU, OUR LOCAL RESTAURANTS PROVIDE LUNCH. THIS PROGRAM WAS CREATED BY THE FISHERMEN TO ENSURE THEY WERE DOING THEIR PART IN KEEPING OUR WATERS CLEAN AND PREVENTING POOR WATER QUALITY. THIS ENSURES THAT WE ARE ABLE TO CONTINUE WORKING ON THE WATER, TOURISTS AND LOCALS CAN ENJOY THEIR RECREATIONAL TIME, AND RESTAURANTS HAVE A LOVELY VIEW.
