Program accomplishments
- Covid-19 Health Disparities It has been almost two years since the COVID pandemic The coronavirus disease COVID-19 pandemic has severe health effects and serious implications for social development. Social activities were put on hold during the COVID-19 pandemic and have affected many people mentally socially physically and economically. As our communities begin to reopen and the COVID restrictions are lifted; parents caregivers children and the elderly have lost much socializing time. The main aim and objectives of the project were to organize outdoor activities to bring all Immigrant community members out of their homes to socialize. Most immigrants in our community do not have the luxury to take vacations go to the lake or attend costly social events. They depend on our community organizations like the United African Community to create opportunities for them. We held sports activities for immigrant communities including Liberian Cameroonian Nepali and Somali to connect with the communities increase physical activity and improve and facilitate youth social interaction to alleviate social isolation due to COVID-19. We organized a cultural Night of Dance; and facilitated a health talk keep fit and safe program.Expenses $7,920 · grants $7,920
- HIVSEX EDUCATION Parents especially African parents are often less involved in intervention approaches to HIV AIDS prevention such as mass media school health education clinic and service provision outreach and community mobilization. The issues with African parents getting involved in sex education are due to culture; and the fact that sex is forbidden to discuss with their children at home. In the African socialization context sex should not be discussed in homes but in secret societies established by the tribe and people and parents are encouraged to put fear in children about sex. When sex education is discussed in the home parents use complex words to talk to their kids. Most African parents wonder how to introduce the concepts of sex education to their children in the Western world. This project helps African parents and also helps children put the information into perspective. Without parents' guidance children find it difficult to understand their bodies feelings images or words they hear from adults. We continue to bridge the gap between the parents and their children.Expenses $29,833 · grants $29,833
- Domestic Violence Project In the tax reporting year tUnited African Community organization got three grants from the Department of Health to carry out these projects. Domestic Violence- the Focus of the grant was to provide education awareness creation and community resource mobilization for the underserved population within the Grand Forks. The grant was a yearlong and continued yearly based on donor funding availability. The grant was awarded to the organization in August and implementation was carried out in October. At the end of the grant period the organization reached over one thousand women through social media and weekly mental health talk shows. The project also trained three LLV- legal Literacy Volunteers and gave a monthly allowance of $300 for in-person education and for identifying domestic violence survivors. The project achieves its goal of reaching out to domestic partners suffering from domestic violence and empowering them to seek support. The project created a safe space for victims and survivors. The project approach was culturally sensitive helping break any cultural barriers for victims and survivors to get the needed help. The organization had a reporting system and budgeting system to track how UAC used expenses per the signed proposal.Expenses $25,000 · grants $25,000
