Program accomplishments

  • At the end of the school year, Healthy Cities Tutoring conducts a 360 degree evaluation to collect summative data from all stakeholders; students, parents, tutors, teachers and school administrators. Each group is administered a survey which captures both observed student improvement as well as stakeholder satisfaction with the tutoring and mentoring experience. We are proud to earn consistently high scores in all categories, showing the efficacy of our program. Below are the aggregated results for HCT's four goal areas for School Year 2025-2026.Goal1 ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE % of respondents reported improved student academic performance 88%2 ACADEMIC ENGAGEMENT % of respondents reported improved student engagement in learning 74%3 SELF-ESTEEM % of respondents reported increased student self-esteem 87%4 TUTOR SATISFACTION % of tutors reported satisfaction with the tutoring experience 98%PROGRAM EXPANSION:During the grant period, HCT successfully expanded to two new school districts, increasing access to tutoring for more students. HCT launched an English Language Development tutoring program at Garfield Elementary School in Redwood City School District, supporting English Learner students in developing the skills needed to progress toward English proficiency. HCT also established a parnership with the Belmont-Redwood Shores Schoold District to provide individualized tutoring for English Language Learners at Redwood Shores Elementary School. Together, these new partnerships expanded services to an additional 20 students.ENGLISH LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT (eld) PROGRAM IN REDWOOD CITY:Students learning English make up a large share of the students served by Healthy Cities Tutoring, particularly in Redwood City. In 2024-205, at the reuqest of Taft Elementary School, HCT developed and piloted an English Language Development (ELD) tutoring program for 2nd and 3rd grade English learners, creating standards-aligned curriculum and training materials to prepare students for the state reclassification ELPAC exem.Following a successful pilot, HCT expanded the program in 2025-2026 to Garfield Elementary and to students in grades 2-5. Trained volunteer tutors met weekly with students using interactive read-alouds, targeted ELD activities, and language games. The program produced strong results; while the district's average ELPAC reclassification rate if 16%, 50% (5/10) of HCT participants at Garfield and 30% (3/20) at Taft successfully reclassified. School principals praised the program's impact and invited HCT to continue it next year.BLEMONT-REDWOOD SHORES SCHOOL DISTRICT ELD PILOT:In 2025-2026, Healthy Cities Tutoring partnered with the Belmont-Redwood Shores Schoold District to pilot a tutoring program at Redwood Shores Elementary School. HCT expanded our recruiting footprint to Belmont and Redwood Shores, successfully recruiting tutors to support seven beginning English Learners. Based on strong student and parent outcomes, the Assistant Superintendent recommended renewing the partnership and increasing the number of students to be served. The pilot also identified ways to strengthen collaboration with teachers. HCT plans to expand the program at Redwood Shores next year before extending it to additional schools in the district.
