Program accomplishments

  • GILT worked with the Village of Dobbs Ferry, Groundwork Hudson Valley and Saw Mill River Coalition to develop and create a new Village park in Dobbs Ferry, New York. We continued to work with the Dobbs Ferry Village Attorney on the acquisition of a 8.4-acre State-owned parcel for this park. We also worked on Trees for Tribs planting events, the Great Saw Mill River Cleanup event and we led several walking tours of the new park. We also did invasive plant removal and trail maintenance. One of the Community Grants made by GILT during 2025 was to the Dobbs Ferry CAB to create a Pollinator Garden as part of this Village Park
  • GILT continued to work with the Planning Board of the Village of Irvington with respect to site development plan approval for a property adjacent to Halsey Pond in Irvington. Specifically, we negotiated with the landowner and advocated before the Planning Board on the design and content of a Conservation Buffer Area separating the property from Halsey Pond Park, which includes Halsey Pond.
  • GILT continued to run the Rivertowns Pollinator Pathway project. This Project is focused on promoting the use of native plants, removing destructive invasive plants and limiting the use of Pesticides. We have also worked to support other communities who are developing a Pollinator Pathway project and have worked with the New York State Parks to develop a pollinator garden project for the Old Croton Aqueduct.
  • We ran a Community Grant Program focused on providing small grants to local community groups, student groups and 501(c)(3) organizations to promote and preserve open space and parkland and provide advocacy and education about environmental stewardship. We solicited applications from the community and granted six individual grants in the aggregate amount of $9,015. We also held a public event attended by over 80 people to honor the six grantees and to hear presentations about the work that each local group did. These projects included the removal of invasive plants, the planting of native plants, trees and shrubs, and developing educational programs promoting this work
    grants $9,015
  • GILT continued to work with the Irvington Green Policy Task Force and individual community leaders to support the Halsey Pond working group that is investigating and addressing pollution and algae problems at Halsey Pond and to remove invasive plants in the surrounding woodlands of Halsey Pond Park.
  • We worked with the Sustainability Director of Irvington and the Irvington Tree Commission to develop a new Native Plant Policy for the Village of Irvington. We provided research about other similar policies, prepared and revised multiple drafts of the proposed policy and presented to the Village Board of Trustees about the proposed Policy. The Village Board of Trustees approved this Policy in April 2025.
  • We provided advice to a local open space advocacy group in Dobbs Ferry, New York, challenging the proposed development of open space on the edge of protected Woodlands. We did historical property research and met and advised this group about strategy to develop a community outreach program and address issues before the Dobbs Ferry Planning Board. These efforts were successful in stopping the development of and protecting this open space.
  • GILT received a grant from the New York Pollinators Conservation Fund and raised additional funds to create a new Swamp Milkweed wet meadow in the Irvington Woods. We worked with community volunteers to clear this half acre site of invasive plants, constructed a deer enclosure and planted over 900 plants, shrubs and trees.
    Expenses $9,942
  • GILT funded a Little Leaf Project, which is a program developed by a local high school student to promote tree planting at the local schools in Irvington.
    grants $1,300
