Program accomplishments
- COMMUNITY OUTREACH: OUR COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT ACTIVITIES ARE IN PERSON WEEKLY "QUESTIONS FOR A DOCTOR" MEETINGS TO ANSWER ANY QUESTIONS THE PARENTS OF STUDENTS HAVE FOR A DOCTOR AND TO GO OVER IMPORTANT TOPICS SUCH AS DEPRESSION, WELLNESS, PARENTING, NUTRITION, AND CANCER RELEVANT TO COMMUNITY MEMBERS. THESE MEETINGS ARE HELD WITH THE PARENT VOLUNTEERS AT THE PARENT CENTER AT WILSON HIGH SCHOOL, HOMEBOY INDUSTRIES, HOMEBOY ART ACADEMY, AND THE MONTEBELLO LOCATION OF A NEW WAY OF LIFE. WE ARE ALSO MEETING WITH STUDENTS AT WILSON HIGH SCHOOL AND ARE WORKING TO RESTART, AFTER COVID AND ORGANIZATIONAL CHANGES, OUR PEER HEALTH EDUCATOR PROGRAM WHERE WE WILL MEET WITH STUDENTS ONCE A MONTH AT LUNCH AND ONCE A MONTH AFTER SCHOOL TO WORK ON PROJECTS WITH THEM AND ENCOURAGE AND ADVISE THEM ON HOW TO ENTER THE HEALTHCARE FIELD AS A CAREER. WE HAVE ALSO RESTARTED OUR EFFORTS TO DELIVER IMPORTANT EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS FOR CLASSROOMS ON TALKS SUCH AS DIABETES, ASTHMA, SEXUAL EDUCATION, VAPING, AND NITROUS OXIDE USE. RECRUITMENT OF COMMUNITY FOCUSED PHYSICIANS FOR PUBLIC SERVICE: WE ARE WORKING WITH A LOCAL PUBLIC MEDICAL CENTER TO INCLUDE COMMUNITY OUTREACH MEMBERS FROM ALL SITES IN THE INTERVIEW PROCESS FOR NEW DOCTORS IN A CORE TRAINING PROGRAM AT THE MEDICAL CENTER. NOW EACH OF THE APPROXIMATELY ONE HUNDRED ANNUAL APPLICANTS TO THAT RESIDENCY PROGRAM HAS AN INTERVIEW WITH A COMMUNITY MEMBER IN ADDITION TO THE USUAL INTERVIEWS WITH MEDICAL CENTER PERSONNEL. THIS EFFORT HAS BEEN POSITIVELY RECEIVED BY BOTH INTERVIEWERS AND APPLICANTS, AND HAS BEEN CREDITED AS ONE OF THE REASONS FOR OUR SUCCESSFUL RECRUITMENT OF MORE THAN HALF OF OUR TOP APPLICANTS. ACCORDING TO THE APPLICANTS, OURS IS ONE OF ONLY TWO PROGRAMS IN THE COUNTRY WHO INVOLVE COMMUNITY MEMBERS IN OUR SELECTION PROCESS AND THE ONLY ONE WHO ENSURES A ONE-ON-ONE INTERVIEW WITH A COMMUNITY MEMBER FOR EACH APPLICANT. THEY ALSO REPORT THAT THIS EFFORT CONCRETELY DEMONSTRATES THE RESIDENCY PROGRAM'S COMMITMENT TO THE UNDERSERVED PATIENT POPULATION. THE COMMUNITY MEMBERS HAVE ALSO BEEN INTEGRATED INTO THE SELECTION COMMITTEE. THIS ALLOWS THE PROGRAM TO TEACH THE DOCTORS MORE ABOUT THE COMMUNITY AND MORE EFFECTIVELY INTERFACING WITH THEM, WHILE SERVING THE COMMUNITY. THE COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT EFFORTS ALLOW THE RESIDENCY PROGRAM TO RECRUIT BETTER DOCTORS TO SERVE OUR COMMUNITY BY ATTRACTING THE APPLICANTS WHO ARE MOST ALIGNED WITH THE MISSION OF SERVING THE UNDERSERVED. SUPPORT FOR UNDERSERVED WITH NEUROLOGICAL ISSUES: WE HAVE ALSO CONTRIBUTED BY SUPPORTING THE EFFORTS OF THE PEDIATRIC NEUROLOGIST AT THE LOCAL PUBLIC HOSPITAL, HELPING TO RETAIN A VERY IMPORTANT SERVICE FOR OUR UNDERSERVED PATIENTS WITH NEUROLOGIC ISSUES SUCH AS EPILEPSY AND CEREBRAL PALSY. THUS FAR OUR SUPPORT HAS CONSISTED OF ADMINISTERING DONATED FUNDS THAT SUPPORT THE EDUCATIONAL AND CLINICAL NEEDS OF THE PEDIATRIC NEUROLOGIST AND CLINIC.SUPPORT FOR UNDERSERVED WITH GENETIC CONDITIONS: CURRENTLY WE ARE HELPING TO SUPPORT RESEARCH FOR THE BENEFIT OF INDIVIDUALS WITH PHENYLKETONURIA (PKU). PHENYLKETONURIA (PKU) IS ONE OF THE MOST COMMON GENETIC METABOLIC DISORDERS. NEWBORN SCREENING FOR PKU WAS INTRODUCED IN 1966 TO ENABLE EARLY DIAGNOSIS AND INTERVENTION. WITHOUT TREATMENT, INDIVIDUALS WITH PKU DEVELOP SEVERE INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY. HOWEVER, EARLY INTERVENTION, SUCH AS THE INTRODUCTION OF A SPECIAL FORMULA FROM BIRTH TO RESTRICT PHENYLALANINE INTAKE AND MAINTAIN BLOOD PHENYLALANINE CONCENTRATIONS WITHIN A SAFE RANGE, EFFECTIVELY PREVENTS INTELLECTUAL DISABILITY. DESPITE THE AVAILABILITY OF DIETARY MANAGEMENT, ADHERING TO A PHENYLALANINE-RESTRICTED DIET IS CHALLENGING FOR MANY INDIVIDUALS WITH PKU. AS A RESULT, MANY PATIENTS STRUGGLE TO MAINTAIN THEIR BLOOD PHENYLALANINE LEVELS WITHIN THE RECOMMENDED RANGE. THIS OFTEN LEADS TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF NEUROPSYCHIATRIC SYMPTOMS, INCLUDING MOOD DISORDERS, WHICH CAN INTERFERE WITH DAILY ACTIVITIES, EMPLOYMENT, AND OVERALL QUALITY OF LIFE, CONTRIBUTING TO SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC DISPARITIES. THE EXACT MECHANISM BY WHICH PKU AFFECTS NEUROCOGNITIVE FUNCTION REMAINS UNCLEAR, ALTHOUGH NEUROTRANSMITTER DEFICIENCIES DUE TO ELEVATED BLOOD PHENYLALANINE LEVELS ARE BELIEVED TO PLAY A ROLE. CURRENTLY THE USE OF LARGE NEUTRAL AMINO ACID (LNAA) SUPPLEMENTATION IS BEING EXPLORED, WHICH OFFERS A MORE PRACTICAL ALTERNATIVE TO STRICT PHENYLALANINE RESTRICTION, TO HELP PREVENT NEUROPSYCHIATRIC SYMPTOMS IN INDIVIDUALS WITH PKU.SUPPORT FOR THE UNDERSERVED WITH ASTHMA: THE BREATHMOBILE PROGRAM SERVES LOCAL UNDERSERVED CHILDREN WITH ASTHMA. SERVINGUNDERSERVED'S FUNDS ARE USED TO SUPPORT THE EDUCATIONAL AND CLINICAL SERVICES OF THE BREATHMOBILE PROGRAM. DATA SHOWS THAT PATIENTS WHO ARE FOLLOWED IN THIS PROGRAM FOR OVER A YEAR HAVE A MORE THAN 60% REDUCTION IN EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT VISITS, SIGNIFICANTLY ADDING TO THE HEALTH AND WELLNESS OF THE PATIENTS AND COMMUNITY AND SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCING THE COST OF THE OTHERWISE EXPENSIVE EMERGENCY CARE WITH THE MUCH MORE EFFECTIVE AND LESS COSTLY PREVENTIVE CARE THAT THE BREATHMOBILE PROVIDES. WE CONTINUE TO ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN COORDINATING THE EDUCATIONAL COMPONENTS OF ASTHMA CARE EDUCATION IN NATIVE, UNDERSERVED POPULATIONS.WE ARE ALSO WORKING TO DEVELOP POTENTIAL COLLABORATIONS TO ASSIST UNSHELTERED OR PEOPLE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS.Expenses $10,131
