Mission
ARTREACH, A MENTAL HEALTH AND ARTS AGENCY, PROVIDES CREATIVE AND PERFORMING ARTS AND RECREATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES TO SUPPORT SUSTAINABLE MENTAL HEALTH RECOVERY. ARTREACH'S MEMBERS SERVE AS MENTAL HEALTH AMBASSADORS AND MODEL CITIZENS, AND THROUGH THEIR ORIGINALLY WRITTEN SOCIAL JUSTICE THEATER ON MENTAL HEALTH AND OTHER RELEVANT SOCIAL TOPICS, THEY ENTERTAIN AND EDUCATE TO BUILD GOODWILL AND REDUCE STIGMA ABOUT MENTAL ILLNESS. ARTREACH'S COMMUNITY OF PRACTICE ENHANCES THE QUALITY OF OUR MEMBERS' LIVES.
Program accomplishments
- THEATER:ARTREACH PRODUCED SECOND STEP PLAYERS: REBOOT, WITH REHEARSALS IN THE SUMMER AND THREE PERFORMANCES IN THE FALL, INCLUDING A COLLABORATIVE PARODY VIDEO, ANXIETY! (800+ ONLINE VIEWS). THE AGENCY CREATED BEYOND THE BET, A THEATER-FOR-SOCIAL-CHANGE PIECE RAISING AWARENESS ABOUT PROBLEM GAMBLING, PERFORMED AT VENUES SUCH AS LIBRARIES, CONFERENCES, AND NOW COMMUNITY COLLEGES, WITH THE SUPPORT OF NATIONAL FUNDING. ARTREACH PRODUCED A STAND UP FOR MENTAL HEALTH PERFORMANCE AT THE GARDE ARTS CENTER IN NEW LONDON, CT, AFTER A 12-WEEK COURSE IN COMEDY WRITING. THE SHOW FEATURED STAND UP FOR MENTAL HEALTH FOUNDER AND PROFESSIONAL COMIC DAVID GRANIRER ALONG WITH THE ARTREACH MEMBERS HE TRAINED, ALL PERFORMING STAND-UP BASED ON THEIR LIVED EXPERIENCE WITH MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.STORYTELLING:ARTREACH COLLABORATED AGAIN THIS YEAR WITH NPR'S THE MOTH FOR AN INTRODUCTORY WORKSHOP FOLLOWED BY A STORYTELLING INTENSIVE TRAINING CULMINATING IN A LIVE STORY SHARE VIA ZOOM. ONE PARTICIPANT WAS INVITED TO PRESENT IN A MOTH STORYSLAM IN BROOKLYN. ART:MEMBERS CREATED AND EXHIBITED ORIGINAL ARTWORK ACROSS CONNECTICUT, AT GALLERIES INCLUDING RELIANCE HEALTH GALLERY, OTIS LIBRARY, PUBLIC LIBRARY OF NEW LONDON, GRANITE THEATER, FOUNDRY 66, AND DMHAS COMMISSIONER'S OFFICE. THE ATELIER MOCA PHOTOGRAPHY RESIDENCY PRODUCED UNSEEN STORIES, A PHOTO EXHIBITION EXPLORING MENTAL HEALTH RECOVERY. WEEKLY ART AND DIGITAL MEDIA CLASSES, VIRTUAL CULTURAL AND ARTS-BASED TOURS, AND A BULLET JOURNALING GROUP OFFERED CONTINUED ENGAGEMENT. A SUMMER INTERN MAJORING IN ART AND PSYCHOLOGY ASSISTED WITH DIGITAL ART INSTRUCTION AND PROMOTIONAL DESIGN.MUSIC:THE MUSIC HEALS COFFEEHOUSE PROVIDED PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTREACH MEMBERS AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT WITH LOCAL MUSICIANS. ARTREACH ALSO HOSTED AN EVENT FOR INTERNATIONAL MAKE MUSIC DAY. MUSIC AND PERFORMANCE ACTIVITIES PROMOTED CONFIDENCE, CONNECTION, AND IMPROVED SELF-ESTEEM.COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT AND OUTREACH:ARTREACH CONDUCTED OUTREACH, WITH INFORMATION TABLES AT FRESH CHECK DAY, SMHA OPEN HOUSE, WOMEN'S NETWORK EVENTS, AND THE MENTAL HEALTH DAY RALLY AT THE STATE CAPITOL. STAFF AND MEMBERS PROVIDED TESTIMONY ABOUT THE VALUE OF ARTREACH'S SERVICES AT DMHAS AND CT OFFICE OF THE ARTS HEARINGS. MEMBERS VISITED REGIONAL MUSEUMS FOR CULTURAL ENRICHMENT.
