Mission

Saving Orphans through Healthcare and Outreach (SOHO) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that exists to improve the quality of life and life expectancy of orphans and vulnerable children (OVCs), especially child-headed households in communities deeply affected by HIV/AIDS. SOHO exists to heal, educate, feed, empower, and nurture orphans and vulnerable children, especially those from child headed households, in communities deeply affected by HIV/AIDS

Program accomplishments

  • SOHO has developed Care Points where preschool aged children (up to seven years of age) can be given a head start with their education. Hope Discovery Learning Center in the Manzini Region has been developed as a model program where children receive a meal upon a arrival in the morning as well as a hot lunch. They are taught both English and Siswati literacy and are exposed to the rudiments of learning through programs that are interactive and interesting. The preschool education prepares them to succeed when they enter the public school system as Primary School students. Additionally, the fact is important that children without birth certificates are not admissible in school until they acquire identification documents and that is often complex and time consuming. HDLC is a welcome bridge that provides learning opportunity regardless of status. Care Points provide a safe environment for children who are vulnerable to abuse when they are not at school. Girls are most often victimized. This is particularly significant in one of the most derelict areas where SOHO feeds 150 children daily a hot meal. Many rely on this as their only meal for the day. Forty percent of the children from this area are bused to Hope Discovery Learning Center daily where they benefit from education at the pre-school. SOHO's educational outreach is centered at Hope Discovery Learning Center (HDLC) in Nhlambeni, where preschool children from underserved communities receive quality early childhood education, nutritious breakfast and lunch, and enrichment activities designed to prepare them for lifelong learning. The program also assists families in obtaining birth certificates and other essential documentation required for children to access public education. Many students are transported daily from the nearby Marekamp community, ensuring children living in extreme poverty have access to a safe and supportive learning environment. HDLC currently provides approximately 1,500 meals each week in addition to meals served during community outreach events.

  • A critical area of emphasis near the inner city is Marekamp Care Point where the largest number of children are fed at one time. This community has many child-headed households and caregivers who engage the children in unsuitable activities such as making and drinking home brewed alcohol. This area known as the Squatter's Camp is violent and unsafe, but services provided by SOHO are opening doors of opportunity for ministering to the children who live there and in the surrounding areas. The Outreach Program Coordinators are Nathi and Amanda Dlamini, a young Swazi clergy man and his wife. They visit the homes and provide emotional support for the children, especially those parented by teen girls. Life Skills are also a focus area. Children who typically manifest the violence to which they are exposed, are taught interpersonal skills through sports. They are also taught woodworking and the items created are sold and the funds provided for their benefit. The community is often served by invited volunteers who bring mental health services and other health related skills to the children and their caregivers. Many teens especially benefit from these services. A scout- like Pathfinder Club is being developed to prove yet another avenue for the children to learn discipline and other valuable behavioral skills. Hope Discovery Learning Center also provides training in handicrafts so that young mothers and girls from the community can develop marketable skills to aid them in their struggle against poverty. The crafts are sold at various outlets and the funds used to support the participants who, often without this assistance, become victims of abuse.

  • Lentsaba Children's Village includes safe homes for vulnerable children as well as education and health care. The program here is holistic, addressing health of body, mind and spirit. There is an agricultural component under development where crops will not only provide food for the children but will also be sold to help sustain the village. Currently sixteen traumatized children occupy the first two homes. These children, referred to by Social Service entities, have suffered physical and sexual abuse and abandonment. Lentsaba Children's Village provides the only Trauma Informed Care in the entire Country. All staff benefit from training on an ongoing basis. Experts visit to build capacity so that healing could begin from the root cause. A third house serves temporarily as a multi-purpose center n where the children benefit from pre-school education and remedial academic coaching. Communal meals are also served here so that the children from both homes have opportunity for meaningful social interaction. This will be the first facility in Eswatini using a trauma informed approach to service, which addresses the roots of trauma in the children and provides training for the members of the community in which they live to be knowledgeable of the effect of trauma on children. The Children's Village is also site of a large agricultural component where macadamia nuts are grown as a future source of revenue and where an array of fruits and vegetables are grown to benefit the children and to generate revenue with the overflow. The farm has also. donated food to the orphans in the program in the city as well as to struggling care points where orphans sometimes lack adequate supplies of food. SOHO has also conducted a Summit bringing government, community and civic leaders together to address the pandemic of gender-based abuse in the country that affects marginalized girls most deeply, with one in three affected by sexual violence. Working in collaboration with community partners, SOHO seeks not only to bring healing and wholeness and a hope filled future to traumatized children and youth but to help prevent the violence that threatens their wellbeing.
