We use our voices to propel into the air the tale of who we are, the song of where we came from, and the story of how we move through the world. ------ SONGS & STORIES: "Swissconsin" Friday, October 18, 2024 at 7 pm Ruth Marty, the daughter of Swiss immigrants, she grew up singing folk songs while helping her father, a cheesemaker, and playing accordion. Eventually settling in Green County, she worked as a homemaker, raised calves, and managed the books for The Big Farm. Through her 95 years, music has been a source of joy and community. Preshow Talk with Professor Jim Leary, Downhome Dairyland project. Personnel includes Ruth Marty, Sarah Marty, Jim Leary, New Glarus Alphorn Band, Edelweiss All Stars, Fran Anderson, and Tim & Kathy Williams. Goal: Highlight Swiss heritage, culture, and history in southern Wisconsin, provide access to the Overture Center for performers from New Glarus, Wisconsin (population 2,200). Support and highlight elderly performers (age 94 and age 87, respectively). Audience: 215 paid tickets plus 25 comps to volunteers and ushers and 20 free Community tickets. Total: 260 ----- SONGS & STORIES: "Moments of Happiness" Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 2 pm Mike Leckrone, accompanied by a trio of jazz musicians, will offer an afternoon of remembrances, anecdotes, trivia, Badger Band stories, and revelations about his 50 years as Director of the University of Wisconsin Marching Band. A remount of his October 2022 cabaret show, Leckrone returns to the stage to celebrate the University of Wisconsin Press release of his book, co-written with Madison author Doug Moe. Goal: Provide community gathering to celebrate UW-Madison Marching Band history, bring together alumni and fans. Support and highlight an elderly performer (age 88). Audience: Audience: 218 paid tickets plus 25 comps to volunteers and ushers and 20 free Community tickets. Total: 263 ----------------- SONGS & STORIES: "Sirena" Sunday, October 20, 2024 at 6 pm An original story conceived by Filipina artist Leslie Damaso, Sirena is set within new compositions and contemporary arrangements of kundiman songs of love and freedom. Sirena blends a personal story, family secrets, a mythic love triangle ending in the beginning of a nation, the displacement of its people, and an individuals search for identity and belonging. Post-show Talkback with Leslie Damaso. Personnel includes Leslie Damaso and a 7 person band. Goal: Highlight both personal history of artist and history of Phillipines. Highlight interesting musical art form that brings together Filipino art songs with jazz and musical theatre. Provide access for local artists to perform at Overture Center. Audience: 75 paid tickets plus 25 comps to volunteers and ushers and 20 free Community tickets. Total: 120 ----- Additional Note: These three shows were programmed as part of a broader outreach mission -- telling stories that would not normally be heard in our community and supporting performers who would not usually be seen on stage in our community's large Performing Arts Center. These three shows were primarily supported by donations and funds from our reserve rather than ticket sales.
