Mission

Theatrical production of new plays by women and trans/gender-nonconforming artists.

990 for the year ended December 31, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • Major artistic activities, 2025 Theater Projects: TWO SISTERS FIND A BOX OF LESBIAN EROTICA IN THE WOODS, written and performed by Emma Horwitz and Bailey Williams, directed by Tara Elliott, was co-produced by Rattlestick Theater and New Georges (we originated and developed the work) at HERE Arts Center, March 28 to May 3, 2025. A word-of-mouth hit, the production extended its run by one week after selling out most performances. AKIRA KUROSAWA EXPLAINS HIS MOVIES AND YOGURT (WITH LIVE & ACTIVE CULTURES!) by Julia Izumi, directed by Aileen Wen McGroddy, presented by Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company and produced in partnership with New Georges, May 2 to June 4, 2025, in Washington, DC. IRANIAN GIRLFRIEND, written and directed by SB Tennent, was produced by the lead artist and presented In Collaboration with New Georges at MITU580, September 14 to October 4, 2025. The project, a darkly comic performance installation about displacement, divorce, and dark times, was originally developed in our Audrey Residency program in 2020, and passed through many stylistic iterations and theatrical toolkits before landing in production as an entertaining mix of solo performance, film/video installation and runway fashion show. EVERYTHING IS HERE by Peggy Stafford, directed by Meghan Finn, was presented by The Tank and produced by Peggy Stafford In Collaboration with New Georges at 59e59 Street Theatres, December 3 to 20, 2025. Anchored by an intergenerational cast of one-of-a-kind performers (Mia Katigbak, Pete Simpson, Jan Leslie Harding, Petronia Paley and Susannah Millonzi), the play unfolds at an assisted living facility where three residents mark time in a common room, acting out scenes from a community theater production. Offbeat, unsentimental, and consistently surprising, the play found an intergenerational audience, as well.Ongoing artistic and organizational programs: The Jam: New Georges collaboration-based, artist-led working lab for early- to mid-career theatermakers met biweekly throughout 2025. The Audrey Residencies: the 2025 residency group consists of 12 resident artists working on 8 new-play projects, individually or in collaboration. Participants in New Georges Supported Productions, in which we provide no-fee fiscal sponsorship, promotional support, and an institutional platform to affiliated artists producing their work independently, included LOBSTER, by Kallan Dana, directed by Hanna Yurfest, at The Tank in April/May 2025; A(U)NTS, by Zo Geltman, directed by Julia Sirna-Frest, at The Brick in May 2025; and OPEN, by Crystal Skillman, directed by Jessi D. Hill, in the Space Program at WP Theater in July 2025. The Room/Subsidized Workspace: The Room hosted the rehearsals and development processes of 102 New Georges affiliated artists, both participants in core development programs and our Subsidized Workspace program, which provides our artists with experiment space for their own creative projects at very low rates. In fact, affiliated artist use of The Room is higher than at any time in our history, limiting the income usually provided by outside renters in favor of our artists and mission-driven activity.
