R0000-035-01: Extension sent before the tax year ended
Form 8868Reject
Incorrect Data. Rule text from IRS MeF Business Rules, Form 8868, TY2026v2.0. Last reviewed .
What this rejection means
Your Form 8868 reached the IRS on or before the last day of the tax year it is for. An extension can only be filed electronically once that tax year has ended.
IRS business rule R0000-035-01: The 'TaxPeriodEndDt' in the Return Header must be less than the Received Date.
The extension was rejected. Until a corrected one is accepted, you do not have an extension.
Why it happens
- It was sent too early. For example, an extension for the calendar year 2026 sent in December 2026.
- The end date has a typo. A wrong year, such as 2027 instead of 2026, puts the end date in the future.
- The fiscal year end is wrong. A date that has not passed yet was entered instead of your real year end.
How to fix it
- Check the tax year begin and end dates on the extension. If they are wrong, correct them and send the extension again.
- If the dates are right, wait until the day after your tax year ends, then send it again.
- Do not wait too long. The Form 8868 instructions say to file it by the due date of the return you are extending. For Form 990 and 990-EZ, that is the 15th day of the 5th month after the year ends. For a calendar-year organization, that is May 15.
- Know the extension rules. A properly completed Form 8868 gives an automatic 6-month extension. The instructions say only one 6-month extension is allowed for each type of return for a tax year. Form 990-N cannot be extended with Form 8868.
For a rejected Form 8868, IRS Publication 4164 gives a five-day perfection period. A corrected extension accepted within that period is treated as received on the date of the first rejection. If your rejection came close to the due date, send the corrected extension promptly.
Your e-file provider sends the tax period fields and the submission. If your dates are correct and the year has ended, and you still get this rejection, contact your e-file provider.
When to contact the IRS
You normally do not need to. This is a date check. Correct the dates, or wait until the year has ended, and send it again.

After your tax year ends and by the return's due date, the 15th day of the 5th month after the year ends. For a calendar-year organization that is May 15.
