Mission

To educate about ohlone culture

990 for the year ended December 31, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • A cultural entity, mak-warep Ohlone Land Conservancy Inc (MWOLC) provides representation for the greater Ohlone community, the indigenous people of the San Francisco Bay Area, while simultaneously educating the public about the value of its living culture and specific land-based practices that come from it.Its primary purpose is to provide education about Ohlone culture past and present. MWOLC's work corrects outdated stereotypes and uplifts a truthful narrative of the historical conditions that shape the present day. To promote this effort, MWOLC is engaging in a project of land reacquisition and restoration. Funds raised by the organization will be used to purchase East Bay land on which to create a thriving culinary and education center, gardens, and demonstration spaces based on place-based, time-tested, hyper-localized land management practices that are integral to the restoration and sustained health of the land in the San Francisco Bay Area. The project envisions a series of native gardens with interconnected trails leading to several restaurant spaces serving traditional Ohlone cuisine. Acreage around these public offerings will be used as space for Ohlone people to be together to harvest traditional plants, to implement cultural burns, to cultivate basketry materials, and to celebrate cultural practices.
