Program accomplishments

  • CENTENNIAL YOUTH CHEERLEADING ASSOCIATION (CYCA) RUNS A SCHOOL DISTRICT- WIDE COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADING PROGRAM IN THE CENTENNIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT IN LINO LAKES, MINNESOTA. THE PARTICIPATING ATHLETES ARE IN GRADES 1-9 BUT THERE IS THE POTENTIAL IN THE FUTURE TO EXPAND THE PROGRAM TO INCLUDE ATHLETES THROUGH GRADE 12. CURRENTLY, THERE ARE THREE COMPETITION TEAMS: TWO ELEMENTARY TEAMS AND ONE JUNIOR HIGH TEAM. CHEERLEADING PRACTICES ARE CONDUCTED AT CENTENNIAL INDEPENDENT SCHOOL DISTRICT 12 FACILITIES LOCATED IN AND AROUND LINO LAKES, MN, AS WELL AS THE COMMUNITY RECREATION CENTER LOCATED IN LINO LAKES, MN. ATHLETES ARE EDUCATED TWO TO THREE TIMES PER WEEK FOR UP TO 2 HOURS AT EACH PRACTICE WHERE THEY RECEIVE EDUCATION AND COACHING ON CHEERLEADING STUNTS, TUMBLING, CHEER TECHNIQUES, AND CHOREOGRAPHY ROUTINES. DURING PRACTICES, THEY NOT ONLY LEARN ABOUT CHEERLEADING TECHNIQUES, BUT ALSO ABOUT LEADERSHIP, FRIENDSHIP, AND TEAMWORK. COMPETITIONS TAKE PLACE BOTH LOCALLY IN THE MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN METROPOLITAN AREA AND IN BROADER MINNESOTA. BETWEEN PRACTICES AND COMPETITIONS, CHEERLEADING ACTIVITIES TAKE UP 95 PERCENT OF CYCA'S TIME AND 99 PERCENT OF CYCA'S FUNDING. CHEERLEADING ACTIVITIES ARE PRIMARILY FUNDED THROUGH TUITION COSTS PAID FOR BY THE ATHLETE'S FAMILIES ALONG WITH FUNDRAISING AND COMMUNITY SPONSORSHIPS. TUITION IS SET BASED ON THE NUMBER OF TEAMS, NUMBER OF ATHLETES PER TEAM, PLANNED PRACTICE HOURS PER TEAM, DURATION OF THE SEASON, AND HOW MANY CHEER COMPETITIONS THE TEAMS WILL BE COMPETING IN DURING THE SEASON. THE BOARD IS ALSO RESPONSIBLE FOR SOLICITING SPONSORSHIPS AND DONATIONS FOR THE ORGANIZATION AND FOR OVERSEEING FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES. CHEERLEADING ACTIVITIES FURTHER CYCA'S CHARITABLE PURPOSE BY PROVIDING AN EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITY FOR YOUNG ATHLETES TO LEARN ABOUT CHEERLEADING TECHNIQUES AND ROUTINES AND TO SHOWCASE THAT KNOWLEDGE AT COMPETITIONS. FURTHER, ATHLETES' COMMUNICATION SKILLS, BOTH VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL, ARE STRENGTHENED THROUGHOUT THE SEASON AS THEY WORK TOGETHER TO BUILD AND LEARN THEIR ROUTINE WITH THE GOAL OF PARTICIPATING IN CHEERLEADING COMPETITIONS. ADDITIONALLY, THE ACTIVITY DIRECTLY ALIGNS WITH OUR ORGANIZATION'S PURPOSE TO PROMOTE AND FOSTER PARTICIPATION IN THE SPORT OF COMPETITIVE CHEERLEADING IN THE CENTENNIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT.
