Mission

The mission of Compass is to provide local pregnant and postpartum individuals and families with holistic perinatal care through advocacy, education, and peer support. Compass envisions a future in which all individuals and families across Marion and Polk Counties, especially under-resourced populations, can access the resources they need in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum.

Program accomplishments

  • In 2025 our grant funded program primarily focused on the following 3 programs; 1) Childbirth Education Classes - From May through November, we offered fourteen childbirth education classes-seven 8-hour Comprehensive Childbirth Classes and seven 4-hour Spinning Babies Birth Preparation Classes. These sessions provided pregnant individuals and their partners with evidence-based information, practical coping strategies, and tools to support both birth and postpartum experiences. During this period, we served 70 families, with 16 families attending both class types, resulting in a total of 86 class participants. Classes were held in downtown Silverton and at the Fostering Hope Initiative (Catholic Community Services) office in Salem. Based on current enrollment trends, we expect to continue reaching 8 - 13 families per month, keeping us on track to meet our goal of serving 150 families over the 18-month project period. To assess program impact, we ask class participants to complete a brief survey at the conclusion of each 8-hour class. Results consistently show strong gains among participants: 87% report increased confidence, 90% report improved knowledge, and 85% report enhanced coping skills as they prepare for childbirth. These outcomes demonstrate meaningful progress toward our objective of strengthening community access to high-quality childbirth education. To measure progress toward reducing interventions and increasing birth satisfaction, we incorporated follow-up surveys for class participants after delivery. Since launching classes in April 2025, we have received 14 birth-outcome surveys (around 20% response rate). Early results indicate meaningful alignment with our project goals. Among respondents, 78.6% had a vaginal birth and 21.4% had a cesarean birth-lower than the 2023 Marion-Polk regional rate of 28.6%. Nearly all respondents (92.9%) reported no second-stage interventions, and 50% experienced spontaneous labor. A majority received doula support during birth (64.3%) or postpartum (57.1%), reinforcing our efforts to expand access to continuous support. Participants also strongly affirmed the educational impact of our classes: 100% rated a 4 or 5 for how the class helped them prepare for birth; 100% rated a 4 or 5 for how it strengthened their self-advocacy; and 85.7% rated a 4 or 5 for feeling empowered. These findings show that our educational offerings are not only reaching families but also equipping them with the confidence, knowledge, and skills needed to navigate their birth experiences with greater satisfaction and fewer interventions. We will continue monitoring trends - such as the induction rate - to deepen our understanding of how childbirth education influences outcomes in our region.

  • 2) THW Birth Doula Training - New Regional Partnership to Support Doula Workforce: We initiated a new partnership with Legacy Health aimed at expanding regional capacity for doula recruitment and training. We are currently forming an agreement under which our organization will provide training for doulas recruited by Legacy Health, in addition to maintaining our existing eight scholarship slots per cohort. Legacy Health has agreed to host our first two doula training cohorts in 2026 at its Silverton Hospital location. They have also offered access to the Family Birth Center for a hands-on skills day, allowing trainees to practice comfort and coping techniques in a clinical environment. This partnership strengthens regional doula workforce development, expands training access, and enhances the quality of experiential learning for trainees. In early 2025 we submitted our THW Birth Doula Training application (May 13), and on November 12 we received OHA approval. Despite our planning, the actual delay in OHA's approval timeline was much longer than anticipated. This caused a significant postponement of our doula training launch - an essential component of our initiative. Anticipating this, we began early recruitment for WHC-funded scholarships and by the end of 2025 we had applications from 14 prospective doulas, with at least eight committed to joining our first cohort-meeting our target for quarterly trainings serving eight doulas. Our first training took place at the end of February '26, and a second training in late April '26. We have also recruited experienced THW doulas for our mentorship program.
    Expenses $7,000
  • 3) Perinatal Peer Support Groups - Our Pregnancy and Postpartum group attendance has stayed consistent in the past 6 months, with an average of 6-7 attendees weekly. We have welcomed new moms recently from WFMC Health. Their lactation consultant recently increased her hours seeing patients, giving Compass Perinatal the opportunity to work with her to help promote the support group to her patients. At the beginning of the summer we launched a monthly weekend family group. The premise of this group being an opportunity for partners to also connect with each other. This group has been well attended and we have had encouraging feedback. Our partnership with Doulas Synergy to host a monthly Perinatal Loss Grief Support Circle is going strong. In November the group moved locations from Salem Hospital to the Enlighten Healing Collective in West Salem. We had received feedback from attendees and people interested in attending that they were not comfortable at the current location. Our contacts at the hospital in L&D and CHEC were very understanding. We have recently recruited a bilingual peer facilitator for a Spanish speaking support group which was launched on Zoom in January 2026. We are proud of our accomplishments in 2025. We have increased our reach by launching 2 new support groups and a further one in January 2026. We have been able to carry out more outreach, connecting with Family Connects in Polk county, attending community events such as Fam Jam (Polk County), Prenatal - 3 Resource Fair, Legacy patients resource fairs, annual Bambinos Mother's Day community event and the Marion County Public Health Update. As well as connecting with families, we were able to tell many local organizations about the work we do for local families.
