Mission

The West Highland Historical Foundation is a non-profit corporation whose definitive purpose is to restore and reform the historical African American West Highland High School located in Fayette, AL. Our goal is to transform what is now a diminished and overlooked historical facility, into a community wide recreational center, by raising funds and by applying for grants. By restoring the West Highland High School into a county-wide recreational center, we can supply Fayette County with a variety of outlets that serve a greater purpose. Providing programs that will deter our community from turning to crime and drugs, elevated teenage pregnancy rates, unemployment, and ultimately providing relief for the poor and under-privileged. The West Highland High School is in one of the poorest areas in the county. We plan to incorporate a museum that will focus on the educational struggles of African Americans and promote a tourist attraction. We also plan to offer amateur sports activities.

Program accomplishments

  • We accomplished setting up the non-profit organization in 2023. This Year we advertised our services thru the website and we tried to get the word out thru social media and by attending county Fair (Set up Booth at the County Fair). The Fayette County School Board donated the deed to the Historic African American school and 16 acres of land in August of 2024. We obtained quotes to repair roof. Mowed property that had not been mowed all year and cleaned up grounds and interior main hall. The citizens that have heard of the project are excited. Many want the old African American High School saved and they like the idea of making it a Recreational Center for all to enjoy activities and programs at the building that will assist the community. We looked into grants that we can apply for. We met with potential major doner (Alabama Power). We applied for Community Project Grant thru Federal Government. However, we did not receive it.
