Mission

The Santa Cruz SPCA provides safe harbor for animals in need and promotes an active humane community through adoption, advocacy, and education.

990 for the year ended June 30, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • Our general operations provide safe harbor for animals in need in and around Santa Cruz County. Our state-of-the-art facility on Chanticleer Ave is an ideal environment to provide specialized care. Animals that might otherwise be overlooked find love at the SCSPCA, where they become members of our family for as long as it takes to find their forever homes. Community support allows us to save hundreds of animals, including those with special needs and those that might be a bit rough around the edges. Animals receive health and behavior assessments, preventative health care, enrichment and training, spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchips, and any treatment needed prior to adoption. We make great matches between people and their pets and provide both pre- & post-adoption counseling.During fiscal year 2024-25 we adopted out 519 animals.
    Expenses $1,330,342 · revenue $86,216
  • Recognizing the need for a holistic approach to animal welfare, our Pet Food Pantry is a vital safety net program that keeps pets with the families that love them and out of the shelter system. During fiscal year 2024-25 our Pet Food Pantry provided over 69,000 pounds of dog and cat food to struggling families; this is a 22% increase over the prior year. We impacted 506 families and their 1,357 pets. We host a weekly onsite walk-up pantry which is run by a dedicated team of volunteers; we also partner with human service organizations to extend our reach and allow the distribution of food and supplies to more families in need. We know that by keeping pets with the people who love them, we are reserving shelter space for the animals who need it most.
    Expenses $57,904
  • Second Chance Fund provides "above-and-beyond" care for needy animals. This includes extensive veterinary care for animals who are sick or injured as well as extended care for animals with behavior challenges. Many of the animals saved by this lifesaving fund were previously at risk for euthanasia, and transferred from shelters that lacked the resources to provide the same level of care as the Santa Cruz SPCA.
    Expenses $53,847
  • Dr. Jean's Senior Friends provides financial assistance to senior citizens and promotes senior-to-senior adoptions. The fund connects senior people with senior pets and waives adoption fees; provides grants up to $1,000 in veterinary care assistance to seniors living on a low income; and assists senior pet owners with obtaining annual veterinary visits and preventative care. Dr Jean's Senior Friends not only encourages senior citizens to adopt senior pets, it also helps to keep senior people and their pets together. This program is primarily funded by a generous endowment received from the late Dr. Jean Langenheim.
    Expenses $20,980
  • The Santa Cruz SPCA recognizes that a community without pet over-population, abuse, neglect, homelessness, and other animal welfare issues begins with the education of youth and adults alike. Our Humane Education team offers a variety of programs that incorporate the latest in social-emotional learning to teach compassion and care for all. Through programs that include classroom presentations, educational camps, and other shelter activities, we strive to make animal-care knowledge available to anyone and everyone while growing the next generation of animal advocates. During fiscal year 2024-25, we reached 2,412 students through our classroom programs, after-school youth volunteer programs, reading program, and camps.
