Program accomplishments

  • EXHIBITION, SURVIVAL AND INTIMATIONS OF IMMORTALITY: THE ART OF ALICE LOK CAHANA, RABBI RONNIE CAHANA, AND KITRA CAHANA JANUARY 26 TO MAY 25, 2025THIS UNIQUE AND POWERFUL EXHIBITION THAT EXPLORES THE ROLE OF ART AND CREATIVITY, BRINGING THE PAST INTO THE PRESENT BY FOCUSING ON THREE GENERATIONS OF ARTISTS FROM THE SAME FAMILY. ALICE LOK CAHANA (1929-2017) WAS A HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR WHO PLEDGED SHE WOULD BECOME AN ARTIST IF SHE SURVIVED THE WAR. RABBI RONNIE CAHANA, ALICE'S OLDEST SON, IS A POET AND SURVIVOR OF A MAJOR STROKE. KITRA CAHANA, RONNIE'S DAUGHTER, IS A FILMMAKER AND PHOTOGRAPHER. THIS EXHIBITION REVEALS HOW THE TRAGEDY OF THE HOLOCAUST IMPACTED MULTIPLE GENERATIONS OF A FAMILY AND HOW EACH MEMBER TRANSFORMED THE DESTRUCTIVE TRAUMA OF THE SHOAH INTO ACTS OF INTENSE CREATIVE ACCOMPLISHMENT, TAKING THEIR OWN PATH TO PROVIDE A THROUGH-LINE TO PRESERVING THE MEMORIES, CULTURE, AND IDENTITY OF THEIR SHARED FAMILY AND THE JEWISH PEOPLE.

  • EXHIBITION, THE ONLY WAY TO HOLD A WEIGHT: RICHARD SERRA PRINTS FROM THE COLLECTIONS OF JORDAN D. SCHNITZER AND HIS FAMILY FOUNDATION OCTOBER 26, 2024 TO JANUARY 12, 2025RICHARD SERRA (1938-2024) IS BEST KNOWN FOR HIS MONUMENTAL, ROLLED STEEL SCULPTURES AND ARCHITECTURAL INTERVENTIONS. HOWEVER, HE MAINTAINED A VIGOROUS DRAWING PRACTICE ALONGSIDE THE SCULPTURAL. SERRA CONSIDERED THE DRAWINGS THEIR OWN ENTITIES AND NOT LESSER COMPANIONS TO THE SCULPTURES. SERRA'S PRINTS SIMILARLY PUSH THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN TWO AND THREE DIMENSIONS, CREATING A POWERFUL INTERPLAY OF FORM AND SPACE. THIS EXHIBITION FEATURES 18 PRINTS SPANNING HIS EXTENSIVE CAREER, SHOWCASING HIS INNOVATIVE USE OF BLACK AS A MEDIUM AND A MATERIAL THAT EVOKES A PHYSICAL PRESENCE. SERRA'S PRINTS, MUCH LIKE HIS SCULPTURES, CHALLENGE AND ENGAGE VIEWERS, INVITING THEM TO EXPERIENCE THE TENSION, WEIGHT, AND MASS THAT DEFINE HIS WORK. THROUGH THIS COMPELLING COLLECTION, VIEWERS WITNESS THE PROFOUND IMPACT OF SERRA'S ARTISTIC VISION AND DELVE INTO THE CREATIVE PROCESS OF ONE OF CONTEMPORARY ART'S MOST INFLUENTIAL FIGURES.

  • EXHIBITION, THE MAGIC WORLD OF LEONARA CARRINGTON JULY 7 TO OCTOBER 13, 2024LEONORA CARRINGTON (1917 2011) EXPLORES THEMES OF METAMORPHOSIS, MAGIC, AND BIBLICAL ALLEGORY. SHE POPULATES HER COMPOSITIONS WITH HYBRID CREATURES; HUMAN FIGURES FUSED WITH MYTHICAL AND IMAGINED BEASTS SUGGEST A CONFRONTATION BETWEEN THE MATERIAL WORLD AND THE WORLD OF DREAMS. AMONG THE EARLY EUROPEAN SURREALISTS, CARRINGTON IS A PIONEER IN HER CENTURY-SPANNING EXPLORATIONS OF THE SUBCONSCIOUS AND HER PORTRAYAL OF IMAGERY RELATED TO MYSTICAL EXPERIENCE. ALONG WITH HER NOTABLE PAINTING PRACTICE, SHE UTILIZES LITHOGRAPHY AND OTHER PRINT MEDIA TO COMMUNICATE THESE CONCEPTS WITH AN ETHEREAL AND DELICATE MASTERY OF THE DRAWN LINE.
