Program accomplishments

  • Leadership ProgramsAIWAs leadership programs include leadership development trainings, committee participation, and public speaking opportunities. These initiatives provide intensive experiences that enable women and youth to develop skills and reinvest their efforts into low-income immigrant communities. In 2024, senior trainers resumed AIWAs longstanding leadership training series while addressing the ongoing post-pandemic challenges of in-person engagement. Thirteen home care workers participated in a training that explored the history of civil rights and immigration movements, language rights, community organizing, and grassroots leadership development. Participant feedback included: I gained a deeper understanding of AIWAs goals and the fight for equality. Through the training, I learned about civil rights movements and the power of unity. As part of AIWAs commitment to workplace safety, 15 Chinese and Nepali immigrant women were trained as peer trainers on worker fatigue prevention. Following their training, they conducted outreach both in-person and onlinereaching over 200 immigrant workers and business owners with information on labor rights and practical prevention strategies.Women leaders continued organizing through active participation in various Member Committees. At monthly meetings, they refined training skills, coordinated community outreach, discussed safety initiatives, and evaluated and planned AIWA programs.Youth leaders in the Youth Build Immigrant Power (YBIP) program facilitated peer leadership trainings on topics such as language justice, patriarchy, homophobia, immigration history, and community organizing. Following the 10-week Asian Youth United workshop serieswhich deepened political understanding among 20 immigrant youthYBIP welcomed four new youth leaders for the year
    Expenses $181,970
  • Civic Engagement ActivitiesAIWAs civic engagement projects are driven by issues identified by low-income immigrant women and youth. These initiatives involve issue education, self-advocacy, and collaborative networking with partner organizations. In 2024, members of the Homecare Worker Committee continued to advocate for retirement benefits and holiday pay. They drafted a petition, gathered signatures from fellow home care workers and their employers, and met with a county representative to present their concerns. Plans are in place to amplify their petition through social media, mobilize community supporters, and continue building relationships with elected officials and labor unions.
    Expenses $49,442
  • Educational ProgramsAIWAs educational initiatives include workplace and digital literacy classes, thematic workshops for adults, and general meetings and workshops for youth. In Spring 2024, AIWA conducted workplace literacy classes in which participants practiced conversations about job types, workplace preferences, and public communication. Concurrently, during digital literacy sessions, youth members and community volunteers taught women how to use various smartphone apps and functions.Women leaders also engaged in experiential learning to deepen their understanding of race, gender, and class. They visited the Women of the Black Panther Party mural and the Black Panther Party Museum in West Oakland. Participant reflections included:I learned that Black people, led largely by women, fought for freedom and rights. The history of Black unity and resistance was eye-opening. I admire their spirit and determination, which inspires us to fight for our own rights.
