Program accomplishments

  • Democracy National Initiative: The Asian Law Caucus's Democracy National Initiative (DNI) supports emerging and established Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) and Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian (AMEMSA) organizations in strengthening civic participation and engagement. Through national and statewide initiatives, the program advances voting rights, civic engagement, and community capacity for AAPI, AMEMSA, immigrant, and limited-English-proficient communities.DNI provides partner organizations across the country with strategic guidance, policy and technical assistance, research and data support, and subgrants to enhance local advocacy and community-based initiatives. Its voting rights work focuses on expanding equitable access to the electoral process, including poll monitoring, language access support, and efforts to address barriers to participation for historically underrepresented voters. The organization also collaborates with affiliates nationwide on litigation, policy advocacy, demographic research, mapping, and training to address issues related to redistricting, election administration, voter education, and access in key jurisdictions. In addition, the Asian Law Caucus convenes the Asian American Leaders Table, a network of more than 70 AAPI organizations that coordinate efforts to address systemic and interpersonal racism, respond to incidents impacting their communities, and develop long-term strategies to promote community safety and well-being.
    Expenses $2,816,023 · grants $273,500 · revenue $146,652
  • Civil Liberties and Community Safety: The Asian Law Caucus' Community Safety and National Security & Civil Rights programs work in coordination to promote public safety, civil rights, and equitable treatment for diverse Asian American communities. The Community Safety program advances preventative, restorative, and community-based approaches as alternatives to the punitive criminal legal system, with a focus on the intersection of local law enforcement and federal immigration policies. Through community education, legal representation, and policy advocacy, the program serves low-income immigrants and communities of color. During 2024-2025, the organization provided funding to community partners to support the expansion of restorative justice infrastructure for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. The National Security & Civil Rights program protects the rights of individuals and communities affected by national security policies, including Arab, Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asian communities. The program engages in legal advocacy and representation to address civil rights concerns, including discriminatory surveillance practices, passport revocation, and denaturalization proceedings. It also works to address systemic issues that impact equal protection under the law.Together, these programs support a comprehensive approach to community safety and civil rights through direct services, education, and advocacy.

Each year, the organization serves hundreds of clients, allowing it to identify emerging legal issues and trends. • Housing Rights: The Asian Law Caucus's Housing Rights program provides legal services and advocacy on behalf of low-income residents in matters related to housing and community development. The program primarily serves low-income communities of color and immigrant communities, with a particular focus on San Francisco, including Chinatown, where residents face displacement due to rising housing costs and economic pressures.Through direct legal services, the organization assists tenants and community members in maintaining housing stability. This work informs its policy advocacy at the local and state levels, where the program promotes tenant protections, preservation of existing housing, development of affordable housing, and efforts to reduce inequities in housing and land use.Workers Rights: The Asian Law Caucus's Workers' Rights program provides legal counseling, direct representation, policy advocacy, and impact litigation to support low-income immigrant workers. The program addresses a range of workplace issues, including discrimination based on race and national origin, retaliation, wage and hour violations, unemployment insurance appeals, and workplace safety concerns. The organization collaborates with worker centers and community partners to support workplace organizing, worker-led campaigns, and leadership development among immigrant workers. In recent years, the program has achieved favorable outcomes in wage enforcement cases, helping to recover millions of dollars in unpaid wages for low-wage workers in coordination with state and local labor enforcement agencies and community-based organizations.Special Project: State Power Building -Since 2022, the Asian Law Caucus has collaborated with partner organizations, including Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders for Civic Empowerment Education Fund, Chinese for Affirmative Action, and Chinese Progressive Association, to identify priorities for strengthening community infrastructure in California and supporting long-term capacity building among low-income and underserved Asian American communities. In 2023, the organization co-led interviews with community leaders to inform the development of a strategic framework for a statewide network of organizations focused on economic opportunity, immigrant-related issues, and civic participation. In 2024, this framework was refined to address evolving policy conditions and to support increased engagement at the state and local levels.Building on these efforts, the Asian Law Caucus serves as a co-lead of Movement Solidarity Among AAPI Communities (MOSAIC), a coalition launched in 2025 that brings together organizations engaged in direct services, community organizing, policy advocacy, research, and coalition building. The initiative supports coordination across regions and sectors to strengthen collaborative efforts addressing racial and economic disparities in California.
