Program accomplishments

  • Sonora Community Hospital, dba Adventist Health Sonora (AHSR), provides quality medical healthcare regardless of race, creed, sex, national origin, handicap, age, or ability to pay. AHSR is a nonprofit community-based system that serves Tuolumne and Calaveras counties and provides comprehensive healthcare services in specialties including: behavioral health, cardiology, dentistry, endocrinology, family medicine, gastroenterology, general surgery, internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, pain medicine, pediatrics, physical medicine, pulmonology, sleep medicine, spine care, urology, and wound care.Although, reimbursement for services rendered is critical to the operation and stability of Sonora Community Hospital, the organization recognizes that not all individuals possess the ability to pay for essential medical services.Adventist Healths vision is to enhance the health of the communities where we live and serve by engaging our communities and our patients in a new definition of and partnership for personal community health. In keeping with this commitment to serve all members of the community, the following coverage will be considered when individuals who need health care cannot afford to pay: Free care and/or subsidized care Care to persons covered by governmental programs at/or below cost Health/wellness activities and community education programsNot only does Sonora Community Hospital provide low-cost care to individuals covered by government programs, and those unable to afford healthcare, it also helps patients find and access private and governmental resources for healthcare benefits.AHSR recognizes below-cost reimbursement as charity and uncompensated care in meeting its mission to the entire community. The unreimbursed cost of providing care to these patients in 2024 was $429,551.The following Inpatient services were provided to all our patients:444 babies delivered796 surgeries performed36,339 patient days The following Outpatient services were provided to all our patients:36,302 emergency department visits3,401 outpatient surgeries performed158,056 outpatient visits 202,106 clinic visitsAHSR recognizes it has an obligation to provide human services above and beyond its role as a healing facility. Schedule H provides more details on the tangible ways in which the organization is fulfilling its mission. The total unreimbursed cost of these community benefits in 2024 was $37,481,251.AHSR's quality and performance awards include: "A" Hospital Safety Grade from The Leapfrog Group in Spring 2025 and Fall 2024, designated as a STEMI ReceivingCenter and the only hospital providing lifesaving percutaneous coronary intervention in the Sierra Nevada foothills, certified by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative in recognition of the high- quality hematology and oncology care, and designated as a Blue Distinction Center for Spine Surgery by Blue Cross and Blue Shield.Adventist Healths mission statement of living God's love by inspiring health, wholeness and hope is coupled with a vision to transform the health experience of our communities through collaborative programs, community investments and community outreach. We are inspired by the healing ministry, as represented by the life of Jesus Christ, and believe we are called to live out our mission intentionally in the communities we serve. In the small towns, suburbs, and inner cities we serve, we continue our journey to provide quality healthcare until every person made in God's image has experienced the best health today, hope for tomorrow, and God's love that endures forever. As part of AHSR's ongoing commitment to creating sustainable solutions to rural healthcare challenges, Adventist Health Sonora is investing in education and workforce development programs that train, retain, and empower local healthcare professionals. This summer, the Family Medicine Residency Rural Training Track welcomed its inaugural class of four resident physicians. Over the next two years, these physicians will complete hands-on residency training and deliver primary care services at the Family Medicine Residency Medical Office in Sonora. As an accredited graduate medical education program, the residency emphasizes the unique healthcare needs of rural communities. A new cohort of four resident physicians will join the program annually. Also launching this fall is the Pacific Union College (PUC) Associate of Science in Nursing program at Adventist Health Sonora, welcoming its first class of 20 students. This hybrid program combines online instruction from PUC faculty with in-person clinical rotations at Adventist Health Sonora, allowing students to pursue nursing careers while staying connected to their local community. These programs are building a pipeline of homegrown healthcare professionals so we can serve the needs of our community, now and into the future, said Greg McCulloch, president of Adventist Health Sonora. One of our core beliefs as an organization is that our rural community deserves accessible, quality healthcare. Programs like these are vital for rural communities, where residents often face significant barriers to care due to chronic shortages of providers and nurses. The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has officially designated Tuolumne County as a Medically Underserved Area because of a shortage of primary care health services. These new initiatives build on Adventist Health Sonoras growing portfolio of workforce development programs. The certified nursing assistant (CNA) and medical assistant (MA) training programs have already made a measurable impact, providing entry-level pathways into healthcare. Since 2022, 32 CNAs have graduated from the program, and 10 MAs completed the first MA cohort earlier this year. A new MA cohort is set to begin this fall.We see our workforce training programs as a win-win, said Tyler Newton, operations and service line executive at Adventist Health Sonora. They help us meet the growing healthcare needs of our region while providing local talent with opportunities to grow their careers and continue caring for the community they love. Together, these programs represent Adventist Health Sonoras deep and continuing investment in community-based solutions that address the unique healthcare needs of rural residentsand build a healthier future for all.Websites for our community benefit information: https://www.adventisthealth.org/about-us/community-benefit/
