Mission
MOPA is driving the industry towards agreements on the optimum optical pluggables to be developed & made widely available to underpin high performance 5G and future 6G network buildouts.
Program accomplishments
- MOPA produces publicly available technical papers documenting the high-level requirements and optical solutions, known as optical blueprints, necessary for critical parts of the mobile network (fronthaul, backhaul, etc.), with the necessary data rates (10G, 25G, 50G 100G) and the most suitable technologies (gray, WDM, packet). MOPA also liaise and contribute to standardization developing organizations (such as ITU-T, IEEE, SNIA SFF etc) regarding standards required for mobile optics. In 2025, MOPA released two new versions of its Technical Paper version 3.2 and 3.3, available on its website.
- MOPA also created in 2024, The MOPA Scientific Program, which continued its efforts in 2025, which is to maintain interaction between MOPA members and academia in a structured way. The intent of this program is to foster clear information sharing from the mobile optics industry to academia regarding key challenges and opportunities in that area relevant for academia to address. Conversely, the MOPA Scientific Program offers an opportunity for academia to convey relevant work to an interested community. The MOPA Scientific Program activities include bi-annual joint workshops, held during OFC and ECOC, where MOPA vendors/operators can propose (long-term) research challenges/opportunities to academia. These panel discussions include invited speakers from academia presenting recent relevant work. Best paper awards are also included at these events.
- The MOPA Operator Advisory Board (MOAB) was formed in March 2023 and continued to meet in 2025. MOAB is proposing new requirements and functionality for inclusion in the MOPA technical papers. This way, leading mobile operator pro actively ensure that the industry develops the best mobile optical solutions for 5G and future 6G.
