Mission

VIA Academy's primary exempt purpose is to provide cost-free educational and mentorship opportunities in classical music to high school musicians, particularly students from remote and underrepresented communities in classical music, through intensive instruction, performance training, mentorship, and career development.

990-EZ for the year ended September 30, 2025

Program accomplishments

  • VIA Academy provides tuition-free classical music education, mentorship, and professional development to high school musicians, with a particular focus on students from underserved and underrepresented communities. During the 2024 tax year, VIA Academy served 10 high school musicians from Virginia, Texas, New York, Kentucky, and Illinois through a fully funded intensive educational program. Students received roundtrip airfare, ground transportation, housing, meals, educational activities, and tuition at no cost to participants. Each student received approximately 20 hours of one-on-one instruction and mentoring with a dedicated Teaching Artist; 12 hours of classes focused on college preparation, career pathways, entrepreneurship, financial support, and health and wellness; and 11 hours of chamber music coaching with professional Teaching Artists representing the Indianapolis Symphony, St. Louis Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, New World Symphony and Northern Arizona University. Students also participated in three masterclasses with Teaching Artists and artistic staff from the New World Symphony. Students performed in two community and educational events, including a community engagement event with younger students at the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami and an afternoon performance featuring music curated in connection with artwork exhibited at the museum. Each student also developed a community project based on their individual talents and the needs of their community, including a mission statement, measures of success, budget, and action plan. VIA Academy measured changes in student confidence and career awareness through pre- and post-program assessments. Students reported a 30% increase in confidence in their ability to play their instruments, a 40% increase in confidence in their ability to overcome challenges independently, and a 30% increase in understanding career paths in music, with 100% of participating students reporting an understanding of career paths in music following the program. New World Symphony also provided substantial support through a $43,000 discount on venue rental associated with VIA Academy's educational programming, reducing the cost of delivering these services to participating students.
    Expenses $53,602
