Mission

SpectorDance's mission is "To Create and Present Dance that Makes a Difference!" Everything we do-whether creative, pedagogical, community-oriented, or even managerial-serves this greater purpose. This mission uniquely defines all our work. Our vision is "A world where everyone is connected, informed, and inspired through the beauty and power of dance." We live in a world that has become divided in many ways: wealthy and poor, urban and rural, politically progressive and conservative, educated and uneducated. We see dance, grounded in the human body we all share, as a means of coming together communally. Moreover, we see dance as a vehicle for education and enlightenment. It can convey the truth amid the flurry of falsehoods. Finally, dance is not passive-for the audience as well as the dancer. Dance at its best can inform, build deep empathy, motivate and inspire action, and transform both participants and viewers. It is not just contemplation or artistic pleasure.

Program accomplishments

  • Creating and Presenting the Ocean Trilogy Project. This project was inspired by a ten-year collaboration with the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute. Our creative process begins with filmed interviews with renown ocean science experts. Selected sound bites from these interviews and related visual imagery are woven into a music mix. This forms a foundation for the choreography. This style is both aesthetically compelling and intellectually grounded. In 2024 and 2025, we presented the Ocean Trilogy Project for 3,500 audiences at the California Travel Summit at the Monterey Visitors Center, and 20 free performances presented through the Salinas Board of Education that reached over 5,000 young audiences in low-income parts of our community. This project bridged the arts and sciences, provided high quality creative opportunities for youth in under-resourced parts of our community, and stimulated rich community dialogue about the importance of the ocean, our most important natural resource. Along with the performances, we also offered movement workshops exploring themes from the piece.
    Expenses $45,000 · grants $40,000
  • Presenting the 4th annual Ocean Arts Festival, featuring ocean-themed visual and performing art created by artists under the age of 14. This family-friendly, free event was based on a long-term partnership with the Monterey Museum of Art. Our goal was to inspire youth to merge their passion for art with their passion for ocean health and to nurture Ocean Arts Leaders. This event featured 250 artists from all over Monterey County and attracted over 350 audiences who enjoyed a day of Art for the Ocean!
    Expenses $20,000 · grants $20,000
  • Presenting the 1st annual King City Dance Week featuring contemporary dance performances and movement workshops with visiting guest artists from all over the State of California. King City is primarily a low-income community with 89% of its residents working in agriculture. The beautiful and historic Stanton Theater is a great asset to this community. SpectorDance has offered free performances in this community for over 15 years. Along with the King City Dance Week, we also offered contemporary dance workshops. The first King City Dance Week reached more than 1,000 audiences. King City youth are eager for this exposure. SpectorDance sees a need and an opportunity to bring more contemporary dance to this community. We have been "planting seeds" for this kind of programing, and we are now delighted to see our efforts "taking root."
