  • Founded in 1999 in response to the cessation of the NEAs direct-to-artist grants, Artadia is a nonprofit grantmaker and nationwide community of visual artists, curators, and patrons. Each year, across the country, Artadia identifies artists whose meritsa high-level of artistic excellence, rigorous practice, and clear artistic voicedemonstrate theyve reached a pivotal moment in their practice. Through this work, Artadia elevates the careers of these artists through a proven combination of recognition, grantmaking, community support, and advocacy.By working collaboratively to improve the conditions necessary for artists from all backgrounds to thrive and succeed, Artadia strengthens their communities and fosters a more equitable arts ecosystem.Since its founding, Artadia has distributed over $6 million to over 440 visual artistssustaining their livelihoods, creative practices, and amplifying their invaluable contributions to society and the arts economy. In addition to its enduring support for artists living in the seven cities of strategic focus, Artadia has supported artists through special initiatives, including the SEEN Award (2025-present), NADA Miami (20122019), Prospect New Orleans (2013 & 2021); the long-running Art & Dialogue series (20152020); and a fellowship program in Houston (20192020).Its current main programmatic initiatives include the following:Artadia Awards:The Artadia Awards program currently encompasses seven major U.S. cities: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York City, and the San Francisco Bay Area. The Awards program identifies artists through a competitive, open-call process that convenes a rotating committee of curators as jurors, and annually supports at least 22 visual artists with $15,000 each in unrestricted funds. The Artadia Awards serve visual artists, with consideration for the support these artists need to thrive and succeed regardless of backgroundin a more vibrant arts economy. Artadia Network:Launched in January 2021, the Artadia Network connects artists with arts professionals so they can sustain their thriving practices. Through one-on-one meetings and workshops, the network supports Artadia Awardees beyond the financial, through discourse, connectivity, and resource-sharing around artistic practice, wage-earning solutions, and other opportunities. Artadia also acts as a fiscal sponsor grant-making agent for a host of artist projects and sponsorships. In 2024, the Network has expanded to include in-person public programs that forge ongoing connections between Awardees, arts professionals, and the public in the seven program cities.
