Mission
The Suda Institute brings healthcare, behavioral health, and social services together to improve outcomes for infants and mothers impacted by substance use disorders.
Program accomplishments
- United HealthcareStarting in April 2025, The Suda Institute secured a grant with United Healthcare to support the operation and implementation of the SUN project across three counties to achieve these three goals: 1) coordinate a system of care for child and family well-being; 2)facilitate Provider Training for a Strong & Inclusive Workforce; and 3) Operationalize lifting voices of PWLE to improve Behavioral Health & Resilience. During the fiscal year, the Institute exceeded provider training goals by delivering more than 580 provider training and technical assistance encounters, leveraged other funding sources to launch North Carolina's first Perinatal Substance Use Disorder Project ECHO series, recorded improvements in 90% of best practices for Stanly and Cabarrus, 85% for Rowan, and documented positive outcomes for mothers, infants, and families impacted by substance use disorders.Expenses $142,151
- Duke Endowment Grant (Yr 1 of 3)The Suda Institute continued implementation of a three-year Duke Endowment grant to test the effectiveness of the SUN Project in preventing foster care placement among infants born to mothers with opioid use disorder. During the fiscal year, the Institute strengthened partnerships with Departments of Social Services, expanded cross-sector governance and legal infrastructure, and advanced IRB-approved research to evaluate child welfare and maternal outcomes. Preliminary findings demonstrated that 91% of SUN clients had custody of their child at the time of data collection and 85% of RISE participants maintained custody from one year postpartum through age five, supporting the projects goal of safely keeping families together while advancing evidence-based systems of care.Expenses $134,835
- Contract with Cabarrus Health Alliance from (OSF) Opioid Settlement Funds (Yr2)The Cabarrus Health Alliance SUN Clinic utilizes OSF to contract with The Suda Institute to implement the system level activities and research and evaluation activities of the SUN Project in Cabarrus County. Our scope of work consists of: 1) Working collaboratively with CHA and community partners to recruit, maintain, and re-engage key partners, stakeholders, and agencies for cross-sector coordination of care for clients, to address systems barriers, and expand services to include others impacted by OUD; and 2)Evaluating project activities to measure outcomes and quality as a method to address stigma, direct policy-system-level recommendations, and support and educate families affected by NAS and SUD. In Cabarrus County, 10 monthly care coordination meetings were held with partners for Cabarrus County (more with other counties), 10 community feedback group meetings hosted with 104 participant encounters, and 45 referrals generated.Expenses $29,426
- Atrium GrantThe Suda Institute received funding from Atrium Health Cabarrus to support the operational infrastructure of the SUN Project, a cross-sector collaborative network that improves care for pregnant and postpartum individuals and families impacted by substance use disorder. Funding supported technical assistance and provider education across Cabarrus, Rowan, and Stanly counties, including workforce development for primary care providers, medical residents, and new clinicians. It also supported research, evaluation, dissemination of best practices, development of an educational podcast series, Project ECHO evidence-based training, and systems-level initiatives that strengthen care coordination, expand workforce capacity, and improve access to evidence-based treatment. Data was collected for 159 respondents, which yielded that 94% reported an increase in knowledge on SUD.Expenses $28,299
- Aetna Through an Aetna-funded contract with The Governor's Institute, The Suda Institute supported development of the North Carolina Perinatal Substance Use Disorder Network and implementation of an eight-session Project ECHO training series. The Institute completed all contract deliverables, including network evaluation planning and provider education, training 53 healthcare professionals across multiple disciplines. Evaluation results showed 84% increased understanding of evidence-based SUD care, 83% increased practical skills, and 100% improved access to experts and positive attitudes toward caring for people with substance use disorders.Expenses $18,731
- HRSA GrantThe Suda Institute successfully completed the final three months of a $100,000 HRSA planning grant this fiscal year to strengthen rural systems of care for pregnant women with substance use disorders in Stanly County. Accomplishments included establishing a cross-sector network, improving care coordination, developing legal infrastructure for information sharing, training providers, engaging community voices, creating a strategic implementation plan, and submitting grant applications to secure additional funding to support sustainable, evidence-based services.Expenses $15,282
