Mission

KruShan Foundation is the only US-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated solely to protecting critically endangered African penguins from extinction. Without action, African penguins may go extinct in the wild by 2035. This isn't a distant statistic. African penguins are marine sentinels, like canaries in a coal mine, but for the ocean. Oceans cover 71% of the planet, produce much of the oxygen we breathe, and absorb the carbon dioxide and heat driving climate change. We're the only U.S.-based nonprofit fighting solely for their survival. Since we stay in constant contact with our network of partners, who are some of the most dedicated, caring, and straight-talking people we've ever met, we can answer two questions in real time: What is the most urgent problem or need right now? Who can provide the solution most effectively right now?

Program accomplishments

  • African Penguin Protection Program: 2025 program highlights--We began working with a new partner, SAPREC, and immediately provided funding for penguin medicine, a replacement for a 20-year-old laptop that was failing, and penguin pool relining. We continued our work with the African Penguin and Seabird Sanctuary. We funded the Senior Seabird Ranger, who protects over 2,000 African penguins at the Dyer Island colony for the third year. To keep the ranger safer and to enable better monitoring of the penguins on Dyer Island, we funded two solar-powered surveillance cameras that will mount to the island's observation tower. We held a special fundraiser to help care for 32 African penguin chicks during winter storms.
    grants $26,316
  • We raise awareness in the Global North for our partners and feathered friends in the Global South through outreach efforts via: * fun and engaging presentations and interviews, both in-person and online; * event participation; * social media; * our newsletter and blog, and * advocacy for increased Marine Protection Areas to protect the ecosystem that African penguins need to thrive. In 2025 we gave eight educational talks at area libraries, we appeared on various podcasts, were interviewed for two online magazines, and ended the year with a special screening of David Attenborough's documentary, Ocean, as a thank you to our local supporters.
