MIKID strengthens communities through three Components: Prevention: helps strengthen families through interventions, including family support, counseling and youth programs. Navigation: Assists families with navigating available resources in the behavioral health and child/adult serving systems. Interventions are provided by individuals with lived experience. Reunification: provided through the Parent Support Now program and other supports to families facing alternative dispositions. MIKID-Mentally Ill Kids in Distress is a non-profit behavioral health organization licensed by the Arizona Department of Health Services to provide outpatient behavioral health treatment to families in Arizona and Colorado. Founded in 1987 by Sue Gilbertson, a parent of a child diagnosed with serious emotional disturbance, to provide services to children like hers. Over 30 years later, MIKID services have expanded to include prevention, navigation and reunification. Through services such as respite care, family support, life skills training, youth peer support, Health and wellness and outpatient counseling, MIKID helps prevent families from being torn apart, helps families navigate behavioral health systems and reunifies families facing behavioral health challenges. As a family-run organization, over 85% of MIKID staff have lived experience, which means that the staff have experience as parents or caregivers to children facing behavioral health challenges.
