Mission

To reduce disparities in women's cancers in underserved populations in Nigeria through health education, early detection, improvement in access to cancer care and scientific research.

990-EZ for the year ended December 31, 2023

Program accomplishments

  • Yemanja initiated an ethics board-approved pilot screening mammography study that aims to improve understanding of the breast abnormalities that could presage the development of breast cancer in these underserved populations. We enrolled 900 participants to the study and the mammography was performed by our contracted mammography providers in Lagos and Abuja. Data collection was through the Vanderbilt University NIH-sponsored REDCAP data collection system. The preliminary findings from this observational study were presented at the meeting of African Organization for Research and Training in Cancer (AORTIC) in Senegal in November 2023 and at the San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) in December 2023.
    Expenses $65,000
  • Yemanja Cancer Care Initiative is continuing its ongoing program of cervical cancer screening in a small local government area near Lagos, the economic capital of Nigeria. Two thousand five hundred women have thus far been screened for cervical pre-cancer using a combined one-day screen and treat approach. Women who were confirmed to have lesions compatible with cervical pre-cancer were treated with thermal coagulation. The women are encouraged to return after 12 months for re-screening. We are well on our way to achieving the UN sustainable development goal of screening at least 70% of eligible women in the community.
    Expenses $7,917
  • Yemanja Cancer Care Initiative partnered with local health care providers and nurses to carry out an ongoing community awareness and education campaign, highlighting the importance of early detection and early diagnosis for improving outcomes from breast and cervical cancer. There is a continuous outreach to community leaders, women's professional groups including hairdressers, dressmakers and market women and leaders and members of all religious organizations.
    Expenses $1,000
