Mission

Live, online, affordable, original plays for everyone, regardless of location, finances or mobility.

990-EZ for the year ended December 31, 2023

Program accomplishments

  • With another nonprofit (https://www.washtenawpromise.org) we run a program called, "ACT ME A STORY, " which involves creating short, professionally produced videos of storybooks. The videos are available to preschoolers, teachers, & families in Greater Ypsilanti, MI where over 30% live below the poverty line, and many young children have limited exposure to books in any format. The videos help ignite excitement about reading. The videos feature professional actors of color reading classic stories and culturally relevant books for under-resourced preschoolers, most of whom are children of color. ACT ME A STORY produced 7 videos in 2022 and is working on more videos in 2023 and beyond. We hope to grow the program & expand its geographic reach.
    Expenses $2,870
  • PlayZoomers is a live, online theatre company that produces affordable performances, featuring original plays of different genres, lengths, and cast sizes. As of December 2022, we had produced 88 plays and are proud to have involved scores of playwrights, directors, designers, actors - and audience members - from 35 U.S. states and countries including Canada, Mexico, India, Australia, the Philippines, and the UK. We have become an international online theatre company and a theatre community. We welcome theatre artists and audience members of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. We offer audiences a way to experience theatre and connect with diverse, professional theatre artists regardless of the weather, their location, finances, health, or other factors. PlayZoomers offers opportunities for actors to flex their creative muscles in new ways, for directors to rise to the challenge of online production, and for playwrights to adapt their work to a digital platform while reaching a new audience. Live Talkbacks enable audiences to connect with playwrights, directors, and actors. PlayZoomers values arts-based learning, too. We train directors and hold Table Reads for playwrights with new work. We partner with another nonprofit on a literacy program, "Act Me a Story," for under-resourced children of color.
