Mission
Equal Plates Project supports a connected community where farmers thrive by growing food for their neighbors and everyone-regardless of barriers-has access to quality, locally sourced meals. Our work rests on three pillars: purchasing from small farms at fair prices, preparing scratch-cooked meals, and partnering with community organizations in Western North Carolina to nourish thousands of neighbors each week.
Program accomplishments
- Meal Production and Distribution: In 2025, Equal Plates Project prepared and distributed 144,607 locally sourced, scratch-made meals to community partners facing food insecurity in WNC. - 45% served low-income children and families - 35% served shelters and individuals experiencing homelessness - 20% served low-income seniors Meals were distributed through partnerships with mission-aligned nonprofit and community organizations.Expenses $1,391,958 · revenue $737,558
- Support for Local Farmers and Regional Food Systems: Equal Plates Project prioritized sourcing ingredients from small, local farms in WNC. In FY2025, the organization invested $271,233.52 across 20 local farms, representing approximately 52% of the organizations total ingredient budget. All purchases were made at fair market value, strengthening the regional food system while supplying nourishing, locally produced ingredients for program meals.
- Program Continuity and Capacity Building Following the Conclusion of HOP: Following the conclusion of the Healthy Opportunities Pilot (HOP) in mid-FY2025 and associated funding reductions, Equal Plates Project invested in organizational capacity to continue meeting community food access needs. During FY2025, the organization: - Maintained operations across two commercial kitchens to sustain meal production and distribution - Signed a lease for a new kitchen and office facility at Haw Creek Commons - Began rennovation on the new commercial kitchen to increase long-term production capacity and expand the organizations ability to serve multiple counties in Western North Carolina. These investments positioned the organization to sustain and adapt programming.
