Mission

Girls Build Kalamazoo seeks to empower young women, especially those from BIPOC communities, to become confident leaders in traditionally male-dominated fields such as construction, trades, and STEM, as well as real estate and entrepreneurship. By providing knowledge, tools, support, and fun, we envision a future where girls, equipped with the skills and confidence gained from our hands-on workshops and mentoring, can change the world and contribute to a more inclusive and vibrant Kalamazoo community.

Program accomplishments

  • Girls Build Kalamazoo provides year-round programming designed to build confidence, leadership, and real-world skills in middle and high school girls, especially those from BIPOC communities. Through project-based learning, mentoring, and exposure to careers in construction, trades, real estate, and STEM, participants gain hands-on experience using tools, completing repair projects, exploring worksites, and developing foundational life skills. During the year, Girls Build Kalamazoo delivered summer, fall, and winter programming that included hands-on building and repair projects, financial literacy lessons, career exposure activities, field trips, and guided tours of construction sites and design studios. Approximately 20 middle and high school girls participated in the program, gaining practical trade skills, leadership experience, and increased confidence through workshops, mentoring, and community service activities. The program has a high retention rate and deep engagement from participants.
