LITERARY AGENTS OF CHANGE, THE NONPROFIT BORN OUT OF THE ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAN LITERARY AGENTS' (AALA) DIVERSITY, EQUITY, AND INCLUSION COMMITTEE, WAS FORMED TO HELP DISMANTLE THE BARRIERS TO ENTRY INTO A CAREER AS A LITERARY AGENT FOR MEMBERS OF HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS, PARTICULARLY PEOPLE OF COLOR, WHILE RECOGNIZING THE SYSTEMS OF OVERLAPPING OPPRESSIONS IN REGARD TO RACE, ETHNICITY, SEXUALITY, GENDER EXPRESSION, CLASS, AND ABILITY.

Program accomplishments

  • OUR SUMMER FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM THOUGHTFULLY MATCHES COLLEGE STUDENTS FROM DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS AND HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS WITH A LITERARY AGENCY AND AALA MEMBER, AND LITERARY AGENTS OF CHANGE PROVIDES A GRANT DIRECTLY TO THE STUDENT FOR THEIR PARTICIPATION. OVER TEN WEEKS, FROM JUNE THROUGH AUGUST, THESE FELLOWS LEARN THE INNER WORKINGS OF THE INDUSTRY AND RECEIVE DIRECT SUPPORT FROM A SUPERVISOR TO UNDERSTAND THE ROLE A LITERARY AGENT PLAYS IN THE PUBLISHING PROCESS AND DEVELOP THE SKILLS THAT WILL HELP THEM SUCCEED. LITERARY AGENTS OF CHANGE HOSTS A SLATE OF PROGRAMMING OVER THE COURSE OF THE SUMMER TO FURTHER FELLOWS' ACCESS TO NETWORKING, MENTORSHIP, AND EDUCATIONAL PANELS THAT WILL COVER THE PUBLISHING INDUSTRY AS A WHOLE. THERE WERE SIX FELLOWS IN 2025.
    Expenses $46,742
  • THE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM SEEKS TO INCREASE RETENTION AND PROMOTION OF PEOPLE IN THE BUSINESS FROM HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS, PARTICULARLY PEOPLE OF COLOR. THE PROGRAM PROVIDES A RICH OPPORTUNITY FOR BOTH ESTABLISHED AGENTS AND NEWER AGENTS TO LEARN FROM EACH OTHER AND CO-CREATE THE FUTURE OF THE BUSINESS. MENTORS DRAW ON YEARS OF EXPERIENCE TO OFFER THEIR EXPERTISE, INSIGHT, AND INSPIRATION TO UP-AND-COMING AGENTS, WHO, IN TURN, OFFER FRESH CONCEPTS, APPROACHES, AND PERSPECTIVE ON THE PRESENT CHALLENGES FACING ASPIRING AND NEW AGENTS AND IDEAS FOR CHANGE IN THE BUSINESS. THIS YEAR-LONG PROGRAM MATCHES MENTEES WHO ARE CURRENTLY EMPLOYED AT A LITERARY AGENCY WITH TWO AGENT MENTORS, EACH OF WHOM PROVIDE AT LEAST ONE HOUR EACH MONTH OF MENTORING. PARTICIPANTS ARE MATCHED BASED ON SHARED INTERESTS AND TO PROVIDE MENTEES WITH EXPOSURE TO OTHER AGENCY CULTURES. PROGRAMMING AND NETWORKING OPPORTUNITIES ARE OFFERED TO BOTH MENTEE AND MENTOR PARTICIPANTS. OUR 2025 CYCLE HAD TWENTY-FOUR MENTORS AND TWELVE MENTEES. AALA MEMBERS ARE ALSO ENCOURAGED TO VOLUNTEER TO BECOME MENTORS TO YOUNG AGENTS FROM HISTORICALLY UNDERREPRESENTED GROUPS.
    Expenses $30,019
