Mission

Using amateur baseball as its platform, build a stronger community in the greater Washington DC area. Community building is accomplished by partnering with community service organizations at our home games at Povich Field to recognize their work and the work of local community heroes. To showcase the breadth of our multicultural community, special emphasis is placed on recognizing particular groups through such programs as Juneteenth, Jewish Heritage Night, and Pride Night. Players and fans provide direct community service through a Roberto Clemente Community Service Day program, and funds are raised to improve publicly owned ballfields, particularly Shirley Povich Field owned by Montgomery Parks, part of the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission.

Program accomplishments

  • BCBBC operates the Bethesda Big Train, an elite level collegiate wooden bat summer baseball team that provides affordable family fun for close to 15,000 fans at its home ballpark, Shirley Povich Field, during June and July. To date, 24 members of Bethesda Big Train have played for a major league baseball team. BBCCS uses these games to educate our youth and the broader public about our multicultural community and the value of volunteerism. In addition to hosting a different community nonprofit every home game as our Community Hero of the Game, we showcase the admirable diversity of our community each year through our Clarence "Pint" Isreal Juneteenth Classic that honors our local history of Black sandlot baseball, Jewish Baseball Heritage Night, Pride Night, Sister Cities Night, Seniors Night, Military and First Responders Night, and Latin Baseball Heritage Night. Additionally, annually we hold a Roberto Clemente Community Service Day during which our players and fans volunteer at nonprofit organizations in our community.
    Expenses $219,789
  • BCBBC runs a summer baseball camp for 300 kids who are 12 and under, helping them develop their individual and teamwork skills while giving scores of collegiate baseball players an opportunity to develop their teaching and mentoring skills and providing role models for the youth in Montgomery County and Washington, DC.
    Expenses $54,758
  • Community improvement activities to improve publicly-owned ballfields, particularly Shirley Povich Field, which is owned by Montgomery Parks, a governmental agency. BCBBC also provides support to other nonprofit onganizations through joint activities and to recognize others for their service to the community.
