This commendation awarded by the National Fire Protection Association NFPA on June 28 2019 signifies the communitys commitment to fire prevention and safety measures. The Greenhorn Firewise Community has successfully retained this prestigious recognition annually showcasing its ongoing dedication to safeguarding its residents and properties against the threat of wildfires. As one of the requirements to retain our certification an annual meeting was held in the Spring of 2024 for our community of approximately 900 parcels and 2-3000 people to promote fire safety through advocacy education and community involvement with other neighbors interested in working toward stronger fire safety practices such as residents hardening their homes and improving defensible space on their properties as well working on localized community projects on such as roadside clearing.

They are strategically positioned 2 and 4 miles from a main road Brunswick Rd. This was necessary and vital for our community on a 5 mile long county road that has no fire hydrants for fire suppressing. This initiative spanning from 2023 to 2024 involved meticulous planning fund raising two easements on private parcels and execution to enhance fire safety measure. A grant was received in 2022 from Nevada County applied for and obtained for four 10,000g fire suppression water tanks and the remaining expenses were paid by donations from our Greenhorn community with the last expenses paid in early 2024.
    Expenses $797
  • Greenhorn Firewise Community a nonprofit organization successfully secured $32,200 in funding which included a generous $10,000 matching grant through donations from local residents. This financial support was pivotal in facilitating essential repairs and enhancements on Lost Lake Road designated as a critical emergency evacuation route for the community in the event of wildfires. The initiative involved meticulous planning extensive collaboration with neighbors the procurement of multiple repair bids and the installation of culverts and substantial amounts of rock. Negotiations on project costs were finalized in 2024 with payments processed upon the projects completion in spring 2025. The project overseen by Hanson Bros. of Grass Valley was successfully finalized early in 2025 post the rainy season significantly bolstering wildfire evacuation safety measures and enhancing accessibility for the community.
