Mission

Scientific research and conservation efforts

990-EZ for the year ended January 31, 2024

Program accomplishments

  • Investigating call function in North Pacific humpback whales through conspecific playbacks. The goal of this project was to test the hypothesis that the humpback whale "whup" call serves a contact function on Alaskan foraging grounds. This is an ongoing project that entailed synthesis of collected data from previous filed season.
    Expenses $15,000 · grants $1,000
  • Quantifying marine soundscapes in Southeast Alaska: A COVID 19 case study. The goal of this project was to quantify and compare soundscape attributed during and after the COVID-19 pandemic and between two humpback whale foraging grounds in Southeast Alaska. This is an ongoing project.
    Expenses $1,000 · grants $1,000
  • Investigating individual variation in humpback whale contact calls. The goal of this study is to assess whether individual humpback whale whup calls exhibit meaningful, and identifiable, acoustic variation.
    Expenses $1,000 · grants $1,000
  • Save the Whales 2.0: investigating the relationship between the Pacific marine heatwave and subsequent humpback whale die-off and song complexity. In this study we test the hypothesis that humpback whale song on both the Hawaiian breeding ground and Alaska feeding ground, simplified during the marine heat wave and subsequent reduction in cultural transmission.
    Expenses $28,011 · grants $19,500
