Mission
FRIENDS OF ODELL HOUSE ROCHAMBEAU HEADQUARTERS (OHRH) IS AN ORGANIZATION WHICH WAS FORMED TO WORK WITH THE TOWN OF GREENBURGH, NY, WHICH OWNS THE BUILDING. THE HOUSE IS A NATIONAL REGISTER HISTORIC HOUSE THAT WAS BUILT IN 1732 WHICH WAS THE HEADQUARTERS OF THE COMTE DE ROCHAMBEAU, COMMANDER OF THE FRENCH FORCES WHO CAME TO AMERICA TO ASSIST GENERAL GEORGE WASHINGTON AND THE CONTINENTAL ARMY DURING THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. IT WAS AT THIS SITE THAT THE TWO GENERALS MET FOR SIX WEEKS, SCOUTED THE BRITISH FORCES IN MANHATTAN AND MADE THE DECISION TO MARCH TO YORKTOWN, VIRGINIA. THAT DECISION RESULTED IN THE DECISIVE VICTORY THAT ENDED THE WAR.
Program accomplishments
- NEW YORK STATE LAW REQUIRES MUSEUMS THAT ARE RUN BY EDUCATIONAL NONPROFITS TO BE CHARTERED BY THE BOARD OF REGENTS. IN APRIL 2025, THE NEW YORK STATE BOARD OF REGENTS OFFICIALLY APPROVED OUR ORGANIZATION'S APPLICATION TO BECOME AN EDUCATIONAL NONPROFIT AND WE NOW HOLD THE CHARTER TO OPERATE THE ODELL ROCHAMBEAU MUSEUM. THIS MEANS THAT SCHOOL VISITS ARE RECOGNIZED AS PART OF THE REQUIRED SOCIAL STUDIES INSTRUCTION AND TEACHERS CAN BUILD TRIP TO THE MUSEUM INTO THEIR LESSON PLANS. OUR EDUCATIONAL MISSION IS OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZED AT THE STATE LEVEL. OUR OUTREACH PROGRAM INCLUDED: OUR PRESIDENT SPEAKING AT THE LOCAL PUBLIC LIBRARY ABOUT DOMESTIC COLONIAL LIFE, AND ALSO PARTICIPATED IN A FRENCH ALLIANCE CELEBRATION AT ST. PAUL'S CHAPEL AT TRINITY CHURCH IN NEW YORK. FOUR MEMBERS OF THE BOARD PRESENTED A CLASS AT A LOCAL COLLEGE (SUNY PURCHASE) TITLED "HOW TO SAVE HISTORY." SIX MEMBERS OF THE BOARD PARTICIPATED AT A LOCAL HISTORIC AMERICAN REVOLUTIONARY WAR EVENT AT CROTON PARK POINT. OTHER BOARD MEMBERS REPRESENTED OUR ORGANIZATION AT HISTORIC EVENTS AT PHILIPSE MANOR HALL MUSEUM IN YONKERS, NY. THE ORGANIZATION'S "MINI MUSEUM" VISITED THREE ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS AND THREE MAJOR HISTORY EVENTS IN OUR LOCAL AREA. WE CONTINUE TO RECEIVE REQUESTS FOR 2026. IN DECEMBER, WE SPONSORED A LECTURE AT OUR LOCAL LIBRARY BY A WELL KNOWN HISTORY PROFESSOR WHO WAS INCLUDED IN THE KEN BURNS TV DOCUMENTARY SERIES. ATTENDANCE WAS OVER 100 PEOPLE. IN OCTOBER, OHRH HELD A FUNDRAISING EVENT TO ANNOUNCE THAT OUR PRESIDENT, SUSAN SEAL, WAS RECOGNIZED BY THE GOVERNMENT OF FRANCE WITH THE HONOR OF "THE ORDER OF MERIT" FOR OUR ORGANIZATION'S EFFORTS TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC ABOUT THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. IN PARTICULAR, THIS WAS IN HONOR OF OUR EFFORTS TO EDUCATE PEOPLE ABOUT THE CRUCIAL AMOUNT OF AID WHICH FRANCE GAVE US IN THE WAR, AND GENERAL ROCHAMBEAU'S IMPORTABLE ROLE IN THE WAR. WE ARE CURRENTLY OVERSEEING THE FINAL INTERIOR RENOVATIONS, AND PLANNING WITH DESIGN FIRMS. THE EXHIBITS WILL BE INSTALLED THIS FALL AND INTO YEAR.Expenses $50,827
